Self Tests

Healing at Home

One of the most valuable assets of conventional medicine is its diagnostic arsenal of medical tests and laboratory analyses. You'll be glad to know there are several Signs and Symptoms Tests you can take yourself to provide advance warning of a developing health condition, or determine an existing health problem. These tests will help you understand how your body works when it's under a disease attack. The knowledge gained empowers you to make clear choices of natural healing procedures you can use to maximize your healing program.

Most of these analyses have been part of traditional natural healing for centuries, and have been practiced in regions throughout the world. Dr. Page brings you this knowledge plus many years of her own innovative work in personal analysis of health problems. Enjoy many more self-tests and healing programs in her best selling book, Healthy Healing™, A Guide to Self-Healing for Everyone.

Allergies - Coca's Pulse Test

To determine whether you are allergic to a particular food, try Coca's Pulse Test, developed by immunologist, Dr. Arthur Coca, who discovered that when people eat foods they're allergic to, there is a dramatic increase in the heartbeat -- 20 or more beats above normal. His test is based on this discovery.

Here's how to take the test:

  1. Take your resting pulse rate when you wake up in the morning by using a watch with a second hand and counting the number of beats in a 60-second period. (A normal pulse reading is 50 to 70 beats per minute.)
  2. Take your pulse reading after eating a food you suspect is causing your allergy.
  3. Wait 15 minutes and take your pulse again. If your pulse rate has increased more than 10 beats per minute, you are probably allergic to the food.
  4. Eliminate it from your diet for at least two weeks to see if your symptoms subside.

Breast Cancer Risk

Signs and symptoms: discharge from, or scaly skin patches around, the nipple, breast lumps or thickening; change in breast texture or color; persistent enlargement of lymph nodes in the armpit; breast changes not related to your regular menstrual cycle; chronic swelling or sores around the mouth, gums or jaw; severe unusual morning nausea; hypothyroidism linked to low iodine.

Are you at risk for breast cancer?

  • Do you eat a diet high in meats and dairy products?
  • Are you more than 25% above the recommended weight for your age and height?
  • Do you have a family history of breast cancer?
  • Do you have low melatonin levels? (Ask your doctor.)

  • Did you begin menopause after age 55?
  • Did you give birth for the first time after age 30 or have you never had children?
  • Do you have large breasts?

If you answered yes to one or more of the questions, you may be at risk. A lifestyle and diet which emphasizes prevention is the best defense against breast cancer.

Do You Have a Cold or the Flu?

Here's How to Tell

Colds and flu are distinct and separate upper respiratory infections, triggered by different viruses. (Outdoor environment -- drafts, wetness, temperature changes, etc. do not cause either of these illnesses.) The flu is more serious, because it can spread to the lungs, and cause severe bronchitis or pneumonia. In the beginning stages, the symptoms of colds and flu can be similar. Both conditions begin when one or more of the over 200 hundred viruses that cause a cold or flu penetrate the bodys protective barriers. Viruses dont breathe, digest food or eliminate, but they replicate themselves with a vengeance. Nose, eyes and mouth are usually the sites of invasion from cold viruses. The most likely target for the flu virus is the respiratory tract. Colds and flu respond to different treatments. The following symptomatic chart can help identify your particular condition and allow you to deal with it better.

A Cold Profile looks like this:

  • Slow onset. No prostration.
  • Body aches -- largely due to the release of interferon (an immune stimulator).
  • Rarely accompanied by fever and headache.
  • Localized symptoms such as sore throat, sinus congestion, listlessness, runny nose and sneezing.
  • Mild fatigue and weakness as a result of body cleansing.
  • Mild to moderate chest discomfort, usually with a hacking cough.
  • Sore or burning throat common.

A Flu Profile looks like this:

  • Swift and severe onset.
  • Early and prominent prostration with flushed, hot, moist skin.
  • Usually accompanied by high (102° -104°) fever, headache and sore eyes.
  • General symptoms like chills, depression and body aches.
  • Extreme fatigue, sometimes lasting 2-3 weeks.
  • Acute chest discomfort, with severe hacking cough.
  • Sore throat occasionally.

  • Do you have recurrent digestive problems, gas, bloating or flatulence?
  • Do you catch frequent colds that take many weeks to go away?

  • Have you recently taken repeated rounds for 1 month or longer, of antibiotics or corticosteroid drugs, like Symycin, Panmycin, Decadron or Prednisone, or acne drugs?

Getting rid of a candida yeast infection is not easy. The longer you wait to begin a detox and healing program, the harder the job becomes. Start now if you think you have candida.

A successful protocol for overcoming candida includes the following stages:
- Stage 1: Kill the yeasts through diet change and enzyme supplement therapy. Avoid antibiotics, steroid drugs and birth control pills, unless there is absolute medical need.
- Stage 2: Cleanse the dead yeasts and waste cells from the body with a soluble fiber cleanser or bentonite. Colonic irrigation and herbal implants are effective here.
- Stage 3: Strengthen your digestive system by enhancing its nutrient assimilation. Fortify afflicted organs and glands, especially the liver. Restore normal metabolism and promote friendly bacteria in the G.I. tract.
- Stage 4: Rebuild immune response and stimulate immune well-being throughout the healing process.

Also, watch out for lifestyle factors that promote Candida infection:

  1. Poor diet - especially excessive intake of sugar, starchy foods, yeasted breads and chemicalized foods.
  2. Repeated use of antibiotics - long term use of antibiotics kill protective bacteria that keep candida under control, as well as harmful bacteria
  3. Hormone medications like corticosteroid drugs and birth control pills.
  4. A high stress life, too much alcohol, little rest.

Liver/Gallbladder Detox Self Test

Body Signals that Your Liver Needs Some TLC Include:

  • Unexplained fatigue, listlessness, depression or lethargy, lack of energy; numerous allergy reactions
  • Unexplained weight gain and the appearance of cellulite even if you are thin
  • A distended stomach even if the rest of the body is thin
  • Mental confusion, spaciness
  • Sluggish elimination, general constipation alternating to diarrhea
  • Food and chemical sensitivities, usually accompanied by poor digestion, and sometimes unexplained nausea
  • PMS, headaches and other menstrual difficulties; bags under the eyes
  • A yellowish tint to the skin and/or liver spots on the skin; poor hair texture and slow hair growth; skin itching and irritation.
  • Anemia and large bruise patches indicate severe liver exhaustion.

Pointers for best results from your liver cleanse:

  • Relieve your liver of toxic build-up and strain by eliminating red meats, partially hydrogenated fats and oils (except for essential fatty acids), refined sugars, food preservatives and food dyes.
  • Drink 8 glasses of bottled water each day of your cleanse to encourage maximum flushing of liver tissues.
  • Liver regeneration needs optimum nutrition for three to four months. Have a dark green leafy vegetable salad every day.
  • Get adequate rest and sleep during a liver cleanse. The liver does some of its most important work while you sleep!

Lung/Respiratory Detox Self Test

  • Do you have a chronic phlegmy cough?
  • Do you wheeze with asthma?
  • Is your head stuffy with congestive allergies?
  • Do you have bronchitis or severe sinusitis?
  • Do you have a runny nose in any weather?
  • Are you a cigarette smoker?

These are signs that you might need a lung cleanse.

Pointers for best results from your lung and respiratory cleanse:

  • Drink plenty of non-dairy fluids, like water, juices, herb teas or broth, to hydrate and flush the body. Milk congests and constipates.
  • Stimulate the immune system. Maintaining a healthy immune system is a primary way to support lung/respiratory health.
  • Alkalize your body during a lung cleanse. Acid-forming foods tend to aggravate or prolong colds, flus and other respiratory problems. Alkalizing foods like fresh fruits, high chlorophyll vegetables, sea veggies and non-gluten grains like brown rice or millet should be used in a ratio of about 4:1 over acid-forming foods during a lung and pulmonary detox.
  • Chlorophyll-rich super green foods like chlorella, spirulina and barley grass speed up lung cleansing, increase oxygen in the body and help treat respiratory tract infection.
  • Get plenty of quality sleep, fresh air and sunshine.
  • Consciously steer clear of air pollution to the best of your ability. Environmental and heavy metal pollutants, like chlorofluorocarbons, tobacco smoke (even secondary smoke) contribute greatly to respiratory problems and can undo all your hard cleansing work.

Lymph Detox Self Test

If you are under chronic stress; if you are constantly tired (indicating liver exhaustion); if your skin is very pale; if you are extremely thin; if your memory is noticeably failing; if you have low immune response with frequent colds, a revitalizing lymph cleanse can make a difference. If your body looks uncharacteristically soft and pudgy or has newly noticeable cellulite (indicating too many saturated fats and sugary foods), you probably need a lymph-draining cleanse.

Pointers for best results from your lymph cleanse:

  • Drink 8 glasses of bottled water each day of your cleanse. Add potassium-rich foods -- sea greens, broccoli, bananas and seafood.
  • Avoid caffeine, sugar, dairy foods and alcoholic drinks for the duration of your cleanse. They contribute to lymphatic stagnation.
  • Spicy foods like natural salsas, cayenne pepper, horseradish and ginger boost a sluggish lymph system and cut mucous congestion.

Skin Detox Self Test

  • Do you have sallow skin? Poor skin coloring may indicate waste build-up from liver malfunction or drug residues.
  • Do you have age spots? Brown mottled spots on the hands, neck or face may reflect waste accumulation in the liver.
  • Do you have adult acne, or uneven skin texture? Waste build--up from environmental pollutants, poor diet, liver exhaustion and stress allow increased free radical formation which attack skin cell membranes.
  • Do you have wrinkles, or sagging skin contours? Free radical activity also affects skin collagen and elastin proteins, resulting in wrinkling and dry skin.
  • Do you have puffy or swollen eyes, dark circles under your eyes, or crusty, mucous formations in your eyes? If your breath is also bad, it's a pretty solid sign your body has an overload of fluid wastes.
  • Do you have a skin disorder? Psoriasis, dermatitis and seborrhea all indicate its time for a skin cleanse.
  • Do you have skin sores or rashes that aren't healing? or hard bumps on the skin? They may be your body's way of saying it's overloaded with wastes that you're not eliminating.
  • Do you have unusually oily skin? or scaly, itchy skin? or chronically chapped and red skin? A skin cleanse will probably help.

Note: Poor circulation (cold hands and feet, swollen ankles), poor digestion and chronic constipation are also signs that your body lacks tissue oxygen uptake. Poor skin tone is a sign of antioxidant deficiency.

Pointers for best results from your skin cleanse:

  • Drink 8 glasses of bottled water each day of your cleanse (herbal "skin" teas are fine, too). Water keeps you flushed, so waste and toxins won't be dumped out through the skin as blemishes or rashes. Bottled water is best. Fluoridated water may leach Vitamin E out of your body.
  • Your diet is the quickest way to change your looks. You can make effective improvements easily. Skin tissues need a rich, high oxygen blood supply, and plenty of mineral building blocks. Silica, sulphur, calcium and magnesium are specific minerals for your skin. Plants are the most absorbable way for your body to get them.

So, soft smooth skin depends on a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. Beautiful skin tone needs vitamin A, vitamin C, mineral-rich foods, and high vegetable protein foods, for collagen and interstitial tissue health. Eliminate or limit sugary foods, fried foods and trans-fats, like those in milk and dairy products, margarine, shortening and hydrogenated oils. Avoid red meats and refined foods of all kinds.

  • Include a green superfood drink daily during your skin cleanse. Superfood powders can be mixed into any juice or water.
  • Don't forget good bodywork for your skin: 1) The healthiest skin needs some fresh air and sunlight every day. Early morning sunlight on the body for natural vitamin D is a key. 2) Daily mild exercise keeps your skin's circulation free and flowing. 3) Dry brush your skin once a week to increase circulation and slough dead cells

Benefits you may notice as your body responds to skin cleansing!

Most people experience noticeable appearance improvement in about 3 weeks.

  • Your face will look rested, rejuvenated and revitalized.
  • Your skin's natural glow will return as capillary circulation and lymphatic drainage improve.
  • Skin blemishes, blotches and spots diminish or disappear.
  • The whites of your eyes will become whiter; dark circles will disappear.
  • Your skin texture will appear smoother and softer; fine lines will appear less noticeable.

Spring Cleanse Self Test

  • Do you feel bloated, constipated and congested? (a sign that your diet has been heavier and richer than usual)
  • Have you gained some unwanted pounds even though you aren't eating more food? (a sign of winter fat storage)
  • Do you feel slow and low energy most of the time? (a sign of cold weather body slowdown)
  • Has your digestion worsened? (a sign your body isn't using its nutrients well)
  • Do your chest and lungs feel clogged and swollen? (a sign of slower, shallower breathing, and perhaps a resident colony of low-grade infective microbes)

Improvement signs show that your body is responding to the cleanse:

  • Your digestive tract will be "washed and brushed" of accumulated waste and putrefactive bacteria.
  • Your liver, kidney and blood can be purified, impossible under ordinary eating patterns and habits.
  • Your mental clarity will receive a boost, not possible under the constant overload of chemicals and food additives.
  • Possible dependency on habit-forming refined sugars, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol or drugs is relieved as body chemistry normalizes.
  • Bad eating habits get a break... with a new chance for you to reform better diet patterns.
  • Your stomach has a chance to reduce to normal size for weight loss and better weight control.
