PMS, Cramps

PMS is by far the most common women's health complaint. For some women, it disrupts their whole lives. It is estimated that a whopping 90% of all women between the ages of 20 and 50 experience some degree of PMS. For some women, it disrupts their whole lives. Over 150 symptoms have been documented - new ones are being added all the time. The hormone shift in estrogen/progesterone ratios during the menstrual cycle is the major factor in PMS symptoms. (Women report the most symptoms in the two week period before menstruation, when the ratios are the most elevated.) The modern women’s lifestyle seems almost made to order for PMS, stress and imbalance. Our foods and our environment are full of chemicals that clearly affect delicate hormone balance. Natural therapies work well for most women because they address the full spectrum of factors involved, but they need time to work.

Suggested Diet Therapies

Improve your diet first to control PMS. Women with severe PMS symptoms eat 60% more refined carbohydrates, 280% more sugars, 85% more dairy products, and 80% more sodium than women who don’t get PMS.

Nutritional therapy plan:

  1. A low fat, vegetarian diet with regular seafood clearly diminishes symptoms. Add soy foods like miso, tempeh and tofu, and plenty of cruciferous veggies to reduce estrogen build-up linked to PMS.
  2. Try a mood swing, anti-constipation drink: 2 cups fresh peaches, chunked; 2 frozen bananas, chunked; 1 cup apple juice.
  3. Keep the diet low in salt and sugar. Eat plenty of cultured foods, like yogurt and kefir for friendly flora. Eat brown rice often for B vitamins. Eat smaller meals often for blood glucose balance.
  4. Avoid caffeine, red meat, sugars and saturated fat animal products. Eliminate dairy products during PMS days.
  5. Drink 6 glasses of bottled water daily. Have fresh apple or carrot juice every day during PMS.
