Natural Therapy for Parasites

wanted-worm-resized-600

wanted-worm-resized-600

Nutritional therapy plan: A strong immune system is the best defense for parasites, many of which have become drug-resistant - low nutrition = low immunity. 1. Go on an apple and apple juice mono diet for 4 days. (1 day for a child). Take 8 garlic caps daily during the fast and chew fresh mango or papaya seeds mixed with honey. On the 3rd day, add papaya juice with 1 tbsp. wormwood tea, and 1 tbsp. molasses. On the 4th day, add 2 cups senna/peppermint tea with 1 tbsp. castor oil, and eat raw pumpkin seeds every 4 hours. Follow with a high resistance diet to prevent recurrence. Eat lots of onions and garlic. Avoid all sweets, dairy foods and junk foods. 3 tbsp. amaranth or rice each morning helps remove parasites. Eat a daily green salad. Drink only bottled water. Take Pure Planet Chlorella, 2 tsp. daily. Garlic enemas or a high colonic irrigation helps clean the colon fast and address fungal infections, or yeast overgrowth conditions.

Are you at risk for parasites? Nationwide research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control over the last 25 years reveals that one in every six people selected at random had one or more parasites. Most kissed and slept with their pets. Many frequently ate raw or smoked fish, or prosciutto or homemade sausages. (Note: Use toilet seat covers in public restrooms.)

Choose 2-3 herbal recommendations:

Parasite cleanse:Parasite Purge caps, or 8 • Cayenne/Garlic capsules, after every meal for 2 weeks, and 4 cups fennel tea daily. (Or take garlic oil capsules in the morning. Refrain from eating or drinking until bowels have moved. Repeat for 3 days.) Then keep intestines cleansed and flushed with •  Ayruvedic Triphala caps.

Anti-Bio caps 4 daily for lymph support; • Black walnut hulls or • Myrrh extract; • Una da gato caps 6 daily for a month

Bodywork: A purged stool test is helpful for diagnosing parasitic infections.

What about a water fast? I don't recommend it.

fruitsveggies-resized-600
fruitsveggies-resized-600

Leading nutritionists and detoxification experts agree that fresh vegetable and fruit juice cleansing is superior to water fasting. Indeed, juice cleansing is an evolution in detoxification methods. Fresh juices, broths and herb teas help deeply cleanse the body, rejuvenate the tissues and guide you to a faster recovery from health problems than water fasting. A traditional water fast is harsh and demanding on your body, even in times before huge amounts of food and environmental toxins were part of the picture. Today, it can even be dangerous. Deeply buried pollutants and chemicals from our tissues are released into elimination channels too rapidly during a water fast. Your body is essentially “re-poisoned” as the chemicals move through the bloodstream all at once. Sometimes, the physical and emotional stress of a water fast even overrides the healing benefits.

Vegetable and fruit juices are alkalizing, so they neutralize uric acid and other inorganic acids, better than water, and increase the healing effects. Juices support better metabolic activity for fasting, too. Metabolic activity slows down during a water fast as the body attempts to conserve dwindling energy resources that further reduce productive cleansing. Juices are very easy on digestion, and easily assimilated into the bloodstream. They don’t disturb the detoxification process.

What's happening to the male libido?

We tend to think of men’s libido as overcharged and always ready for action. This may be true for many men. Still, with the advent of erection enhancing drugs like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, there’s no question that a lot of men are looking for new ways to bring back their youthful sexuality.  Some sexual problems like occasional erectile dysfunction impotence or reduced libido can actually be a good wake up call that overall health needs a boost. For instance, impotence problems may signal later cardiovascular problems due to poor circulation. A low libido in a man may be a sign of depression, reduced testosterone or , most often, a lackluster diet with little or no fresh fruits and vegetables. All of the factors can be easily improved with healthy diet changes, targeted herbal therapy and regular exercise. Further, sometimes, a man may only need to take a closer look at his prescription medication for the cause of his low libido or erectile dysfunction. Antidepressants, sedatives, high blood pressure medication, and diuretics top the list of drugs that can put a damper on male libido and the ability to achieve an erection.

Are your testosterone levels low?

Around four to five million American men do not produce enough testosterone. Even more worrisome, research shows that most men know very little about testosterone, or how low testosterone levels can affect their health.

Low testosterone signs to watch for: Lack of energy and libido Difficulty concentrating or depression Low sperm count/ Infertility Weakened erections Loss of muscle mass or body hair Increased breast size Bone loss or osteoporosis

Testosterone replacement with bioidentical hormones or transdermal gels is becoming more and more popular for men with this problem, but any type of testosterone replacement should be closely monitored to avoid health risks like hormone-driven prostate or testicular cancer, and side effects like prostate enlargement, acne, head hair loss, fertility problems, and irritability.

Is It Time For a Spring Cleanse?

A spring cleanse is a real breath of fresh air for your body after a long winter. It’s one of the best ways to quickly shed winter weight and increase your energy levels. Hippocrates, “the Father of Medicine,” Galen, Paracelsus and other great physicians throughout history prescribed detoxification. It was even practiced by Plato and Socrates. Cleansing has been helping people heal for over 20,000 years! Fact:  At least 20% of the food supply is contaminated with pesticide residues. The average American gets about 68 exposures to these toxins each day!  We are just beginning to see the far-reaching implications on hormonal health, specifically on hormone-driven cancers like that of the breast, testicles, and prostate; infertility problems in men and women; endocrine disorders; and earlier and earlier puberties for young American girls.

Body signs that you may need a detox: A yes answer to two or more of these symptoms should alert you to signs of toxic overload.

—body odor, bad breath or a coated tongue —frequent candida infections or UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) —poor digestion, heartburn, constipation with intestinal bloating or gas —unusual fatigue; relying on stimulant pick-me-ups like sugar and caffeine to get through the day —cellulite collecting on your hips, thighs or tummy

You should be drinking at least 3 glasses of mixed fresh vegetable or fruit juices every day of your cleanse.Fresh fruit and vegetable juices have a powerful effect on the body’s recuperative powers because of their rich, easily absorbed nutrients and life giving enzymes.  Enzyme-rich fresh fruit and vegetable juices literally pick up dead, decaying material in the body and carry it away.  Note: Avoid caffeine, sugar, dairy foods and alcoholic drinks for the duration of your cleanse. They contribute to lymphatic stagnation.

I usually recommend a 3 to 5 day diet plan because it’s the easiest to fit in most people’s busy lifestyles. For the best results, I recommend following your detox with 1 to 4 days of a diet of 100% fresh foods. You can begin on a Friday and detox for a long weekend. For people who want to go on a longer, more intense detox, detox spas and centers where you will receive professional guidance are the best choice.

The Natural Keys To Controlling PMS

PMS is by far the most common woman's health complaint. For some women, PMS is a minor inconvenience that lasts a few days. For others, it disrupts the whole month! A woman's body is delicately tuned, and can become unbalanced easily, causing pain, poor function, and a disconcerting feeling of not being "together," especially during the menstrual cycle. Fortunately, women can take relieve PMS effectively with a simple 4 point program.

1. Use essential fatty acids to balance prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are vital hormone-type compounds that regulate body functions almost like an electrical current.

2. Love your liver. The liver is in charge of hormone metabolism, and helps to rebalance estrogen and progesterone levels.

3. Enhance your thyroid to reduce PMS. Excess estrogen in the body is related to thyroid imbalance. If the thyroid does not have enough iodine, insufficient thyroid hormone is produced and too much estrogen builds up. Seaweeds are a good choice because they are rich in iodine.

4. Phytohormone-rich plants like soybeans, wild yam, licorice root and dong quai, help control PMS symptoms and have a safety record of centuries. An phytohormone-rich combination like  works as a balancing resource to keep PMS symptoms at bay, naturally.

A woman can expect a natural healing program for PMS relief to take at least two months, as the body works through both ovary cycles. The first month, there is a noticeable decrease in PMS symptoms; the second month often finds them dramatically reduced.

Do you have a cold or flu? Take this self-test.

Many people around the U.S. are still miserable with cold and flu symptoms. If you're unsure which you have, please review my self-test for colds and flu from my book, Healthy Healing 14th Edition. Colds and flu are distinct and separate upper respiratory infections, triggered by different viruses. The flu is more serious, because it can spread to the lungs, and cause severe bronchitis or pneumonia. In the beginning stages, the symptoms of colds and flu can be similar. Nose, eyes and mouth are usually the sites of invasion from cold viruses. The most likely target for the flu virus is the respiratory tract.

A Cold Profile looks like this:

• Slow onset. No prostration.

• Body aches—largely due to the release of interferon (an immune stimulator).

• Rarely accompanied by fever and headache.

• Localized symptoms such as sore throat, sinus congestion, listlessness, runny nose and sneezing.

• Mild to moderate chest discomfort.

• Sore or burning throat common.

A Flu Profile looks like this:

• Swift and severe onset.

• Early and prominent prostration with flushed, hot, moist skin.

• Usually accompanied by high (102° -104°) fever, headache and sore eyes.

• General symptoms like chills, depression and body aches.

• Extreme fatigue, sometimes lasting 2-3 weeks.

• Acute chest discomfort, with severe hacking cough.

• Sore throat occasionally.

If you’re feeling under the weather, please make sure to get plenty of rest. Light exercise is better than intense exercise during a cold or flu.

Thermogenesis is critical to weight loss after 40.

Thermogenesis is about fat burning. About 75% of the calories you eat work to keep you alive and support your resting metabolic rate. The rest are stored as white fat, or burned up by brown adipose tissue, (BAT), your fat-burning factory. Brown fat is the body’s chief regulator of thermogenesis, so the more active your brown fat is, the easier it is to maintain a desirable weight. Dieters who rely solely on restricting their calorie intake usually end up disappointed, because extreme calorie restriction lowers the rate of thermogenesis. Your body actually burns less fat than it did before you started dieting. People who yo-yo on and off low calorie diets have even more problems. When a yo-yo dieter begins to increase calorie intake after dieting, their metabolic rate does not return to pre-diet levels, so they store more calories as fat than they did before they started!

Middle-aged spread means you’re not burning enough calories after you eat. Everybody increases metabolism after eating, but the amounts of heat (thermogenesis) vary widely. Lean people experience a 40% increase in heat production after a meal. Overweight people may have only an increase of 10%. Obesity occurs primarily when brown fat isn’t working properly, only a little thermogenesis takes place, and the body deals with the excess calories by storing them as fat. During mid-life years, starting in our early 40s, a genetic timer shuts down the thermogenic mechanism. Turning this timer back on is the secret to re-activating thermogenesis and a more youthful metabolism.

Here’s how brown fat works to stimulate thermogenesis: A protein, called uncoupling protein, breaks down, or uncouples, the train of biochemical events that the cells use to turn calories into energy. Brown fat cells continue to convert calories into heat as long as they are stimulated, and as long as there is white fat for them to work on. Brown fat activity is also self-perpetuating, because it energizes more uncoupling proteins, produces more brown fat cells, and results in substantially more excess calories being burned off as heat through thermogenesis.

Research into the genetics of obesity shows that some people are not born with enough brown fat. People who eat lightly but still can’t lose weight, gain more weight in middle age because the little brown fat they did have is reduced even further. Thermogenesis research demonstrates that it is possible to reverse this aberration. Thermogenic herbs have been successful at reactivating brown fat in middle age. They can increase calorie burning without additional diet changes or exercise, although these things offer added benefits.

1. Thermogenic herbs increase blood flow to lean muscle tissue, so it works faster and longer.

2. Thermogenic herbs suppress appetite. You eat less with less effort.

3. The longer you take thermogenic herb formulas, the more effective they tend to become, because they help your body produce enough thermogenic activity to make a difference.

A hot seaweed bath uses the sea for cleansing and health

seaweed-resized-600

seaweed-resized-600

Seaweed baths are Nature’s perfect body/psyche balancer. Remember how good you feel after an ocean walk? Seaweeds purify and balance the ocean — they can do the same for your body. A hot seaweed bath is like a wet-steam sauna, only better, because the sea greens balance body chemistry instead of dehydrating it. The electromagnetic action of the seaweed releases excess body fluids from congested cells, and dissolves fatty wastes through the skin, replacing them with depleted minerals, especially potassium and iodine. Iodine boosts thyroid activity, so food fuels are used before they can turn into fatty deposits. Vitamin K in seaweeds boosts adrenal activity, meaning that a seaweed bath can help maintain hormone balance for a more youthful body.Taking a seaweed bath even once a week stimulates lymphatic drainage and fat burning so you can keep off excess weight, reduce cellulite and rid your body of toxins.

Dried seaweeds are available in most health food stores or try my Hot Seaweed Bath.  Here is how to take a this type of bath.

Whichever form you choose, run very hot water over the seaweed in a tub, filling it to the point that you will be covered when you recline. The water will turn rich brown as the plants release their minerals. Add an aromatherapy bath oil if desired, to help hold the heat in and boost your cleansing program. Let the bath cool enough to get in. As you soak, the gel from the seaweed will transfer onto your skin. This coating increases perspiration to release system toxins, and replaces them with minerals by osmosis. Rub your skin with the seaweed during the bath to stimulate circulation, smooth the body, and remove wastes coming out on the skin surface. When the seaweeds have done their work, the gel coating dissolves and floats off the skin, and the seaweeds shrivel - a sign that the bath is over. Each bath varies with the individual, the seaweeds used, and water temperature, but the gel coating release is a natural timekeeper for the bath. Forty-five minutes is usually long enough to balance body pH, encourage liver activity and fat metabolism. Skin tone, color, and circulatory improvement are almost immediately noticeable. After your bath, try a capsule of cayenne and ginger to assimilate the seaweed minerals.

Weight loss after 40 through healthy detoxification!

Even though Americans are still looking for the “miracle magic bullet” for slimness, everyone is slowly realizing that a good diet has to be front and center for health and body tone. Long term weight control is always the result of a sound nutritious eating plan and regular exercise, rather than a try at the latest fad diet. One of the great advantages of achieving weight loss through a cleansing program is the extra energy you feel from the fresh juices, superfoods, herb teas and healing broths. Most weight loss diets have little nutrition to offer so they leave you feeling tired and lifeless. In the end, even if you lose weight, your body feels so deprived that it starts ravenous cravings for foods that put the weight right back on.  A cleanse is one of the best ways to jump start a new health program. Unhealthy fats, like saturated fats in meats and dairy foods, trans-fats like those in many dairy foods, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils like those in margarine, shortening and many snack foods, and oxidized fats, like those in all fried foods, collect into excess body fat. Sugary foods and highly processed foods (like fast foods) are so devoid of digestive enzymes that they end up collecting as excess fat, too. Further, if you are congested, your body tries to dump its metabolic wastes to get them out of the way — one of the places that receives metabolic wastes is excess fat.

A 2-3 week Detox Diet for Weight Loss

Making a healing diet change and losing excess weight is one of the best things you can do for your health. The rewards are high - a longer, healthier life - and control of your life.

On rising: Squeeze 2 lemons in a glass of water, and drink for a quick liver flush.

Breakfast: Have a poached or baked egg with bran muffins or whole grain toast with ghee or a healthy jam; or have low fat yogurt and some whole grain cereal.; or Try a healthy meal replacement shake.

Mid-morning: Have a green veggie drink, or natural V-8 juice or peppermint tea; or a cup of miso soup with sea greens snipped on top; or crunchy raw veggies with yogurt cheese dip.

Lunch: Have fresh leafy green salad with a lemon/oil or yogurt dressing with baked tofu; or miso soup, with steamed veggies and a light sauce.

Mid-afternoon: Have a bottle of mineral water, or a cup of peppermint tea, or apple or cranberry juice; or have a superfood drink like Energy Green.

Dinner: Have a stir-fry with lots of greens, onions, mushrooms, with clear soup and brown rice; or baked/broiled fish or seafood with some steamed veggies, brown rice or millet.

Evening snack: Have some un-buttered spicy popcorn. It’s good for you and its airiness will fill you up and keep you from wanting heavier or “habit” foods.

Bodywork techniques accelerate and round out your cleanse

Daily exercise releases fat from cells. A brisk walk burns calories and cuts cravings. An outdoor walk in winter raises low serotonin levels. Exercise early in the day raises metabolism as much as 25%! Exercising before breakfast helps the body dip into its fat stores for quick energy and curbs the munchies all day. Even if eating habits just slightly change, you can still lose weight with a brisk hour’s walk or 15 minutes of aerobic exercise.

Do You Need A Colon Detox?

The Importance of a Colon Cleanse

A colon elimination cleanse is a cleanse most of us need. The latest estimates show that over 90% of disease in America is directly or indirectly attributable to an unhealthy colon. As the solid waste management organ for the entire body, your colon is also the easiest breeding ground for putrefactive bacteria, viruses and parasites. A nationwide survey reveals that one in every six people have parasites living somewhere in the body.

Hardly any healing program will work without a colon cleanse as part of it. Problems like headaches, skin blemishes, bad breath, fatigue, arthritis and heart disease are linked to a congested colon. Colon and bowel malfunctions are one of the biggest factors in accelerated aging. Cleansing your colon lightens the toxic load on every other part of your body... even your mind (mental dullness is a sign of colon congestion). When colon health is compromised, waste backs up, becomes toxic, and releases the toxins into the bloodstream. Real healing takes place at the deepest cellular levels. Your blood feeds your cells. The nutrients that reach your blood get there by the way of the colon. So, a clogged, dirty colon means toxins in your blood.

Is your colon toxic? Ask yourself these questions:

...Is your elimination time slow?

Bowel transit time should be approximately twelve hours. Slow bowel transit time allows wastes to become rancid. Blood capillaries lining the colon absorb these poisons into the bloodstream, exposing the rest of your body to the toxins.

...Do you eat fast food, highly processed, synthetic, or chemical laced foods?

A clean, strong system can metabolize or eliminate many pollutants that come into your body, but if you are constipated, they are stored in your system. As more and different chemicals enter your body they tend to inter-react with those that are already there, forming second generation chemicals more harmful than the originals. Colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, ileitis and Crohn's disease, are all signs of waste congestion. They're on the rise, too. Over 100,000 Americans have a colostomy every year!

...Is your digestion poor?

The most common sign of toxic bowel overload is poor digestion. If you're eating a lot of rich, red meats and cheeses, white bread, sugary, salty foods or fried foods, they're robbing your body of critical electrolytes and they have almost no fiber for digestion. A high fiber diet is both cure and prevention for waste elimination problems. Eating high fiber means you're moving food through your digestive system quickly and easily. A low residue diet causes a gluey state - and your intestinal contractions can't work efficiently. You can picture this if you remember the hard paste formed by white flour and water when you were a kid. A lot of the food we eat today is simply crammed into the colon, never fully excreted.

Media attention has been focused for decades on high fiber foods. Everybody in America must have changed their diet to a more colon-healthy pattern, right? This is simply not the case. Americans target their diets to reduce fat at all costs, often at the expense of a fiber-rich diet.

Check your fiber. The protective level of fiber in your diet is easily measured:

  • The stool should be light enough to float.

  • Bowel movements should be regular, daily and effortless.

  • The stool should be almost odorless, signaling less bowel transit time.

  • There should be little gas or flatulence.

Colon Self Test

Could your body use a colon cleanse?

  • Constipated most of the time? a colon cleanse softens and removes colon congestion

  • Feeling heavy and bloated? a colon cleanse helps you lose colon congestive weight

  • Gassy with audible bowel rumbling and discomfort after you eat? a colon cleanse removes gluey materials impairing digestion

  • Catch a cold, or flu every few weeks? a colon cleanse releases excess mucous that harbors viruses

  • Tired for no real reason? a colon cleanse boosts immune and liver response for more energy

  • Have a coated tongue, bad breath, or body odor? a colon cleanse clears rancidity that causes bad odors

  • Do you feel mentally slow and tired? a colon cleanse lets more blood circulation get to your brain

  • Skin unusually sallow and dull? a colon cleanse removes toxin that come out through your skin

  • Have a degenerative disease like cancer, arthritis or lupus? a colon cleanse removes toxic elements

  • Cholesterol numbers too high? a colon cleanse increases absorption of cholesterol-lowering foods

If you answered yes to any of these questions, a colon cleanse could provide you tremendous benefit to your overall health and well being.

  • Mid-morning: take 2 tbsp. aloe juice concentrate in a glass of juice or water and 1000mg vitamin C.

  • Lunch: take a small glass of fresh carrot juice.

  • Mid-afternoon: take an herbal colon cleansing tea, Bloat Release™ Tea.

  • About 5 o' clock: a small glass of potassium broth, or fresh carrot juice.

  • Dinner: take a glass of apple or papaya juice and 1000mg vitamin C.

  • Before Bed: repeat the herbal cleansers that you took on rising with a cup of mint tea.

Eat a raw foods salad on the last night of your cleanse.

To boost your cleanse, add 2 or 3 cleansing boosters:

  • Chlorophyll sources: Energy Green Renewal™ Drink Mix

  • Enzymes: Dr. Enzyme™ between meals

  • Electrolytes speed up a cleanse: Nature's Path Trace-Lyte Liquid Minerals; Arise & Shine Alkalizer.

  • Fiber support: Planetary TRI-CLEANSE; AloeLife FiberMate.

Note 1: Drugstore laxatives aren't really cleansers. They offer only temporary relief, are usually habit-forming, destructive to intestinal membranes, and don't get to the cause of the problem. The laxative so irritates the colon that the bowels expel whatever loose material is around. Note 2: Bowel elimination problems are often chronic and may need several rounds of cleansing. Alternate cleansing with periods of eating a healthy diet.

Colon Cleanse Bodywork

Techniques to enhance your cleanse: Irrigate: a colonic irrigation is a good way to start a colon/bowel cleanse. Grapefruit seed extract (15 to 20 drops in a gallon of water) is effective, especially if there is colon toxicity along with constipation. Try a catnip or diluted liquid chlorophyll enema every other night during the cleanse.

Exercise: Take a brisk walk for an hour every day to help keep your elimination channels moving.

Bathe: Take several long warm baths during your cleanse. Dry skin brushing will help release toxins coming out through your skin. Lemon Detox Bath: add into warm bath - 5 drops lemon essential oil and 2 drops geranium essential oil.

Massage therapy: Get one good lower back and pelvis massage during your cleanse.

Visualize your detox: Close your eyes; inhale and exhale long and slowly. As you exhale, visualize toxins dislodging and leaving your colon. As you inhale, visualize nourishing nutrients rebuilding vibrancy.

What is a traditional naturopath?

Naturopathy and naturopathic medicine, is the fastest growing of all the alternative healing disciplines. As more people have become disillusioned with conventional health care, it has certainly gained new respect as a credible healing modality. But naturopaths really fall into two very different groups. Traditionally trained naturopaths (N.D.’s) use the naturopathy degree to consult with clients, and as an accreditation to teach, to write and to access research. A core belief of naturopathy is education—passing on knowledge to empower the client. A smaller number of naturopaths are trained medically (N.M.D.’s) with an education similar to that of a conventional M.D.. They have extensive hands-on coursework in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, and other conventional disciplines.

I work as a traditional naturopath, specializing in non-invasive, lifestyle consultation. A traditional naturopath avoids diagnosing disease or prescribing medication. The principles which guide traditional naturopathy lead to general improvement in health. Commonly, clients find that long standing health problems have improved or disappeared. In fact, the greatest success of naturopathy is in rebuilding health, which then naturally improves or eliminates chronic illness.

Traditional naturopathy is not recommended for acute trauma, such as a serious automobile accident, a childbirth emergency, or orthopedic problems that need corrective surgery. It can contribute to faster recovery in these cases. Still, these situations are best suited for conventional medicine or medical doctors who also have a background in natural medicine. Conventional medicine without a doubt, really excels in emergency health care.

Traditional naturopaths focus on the client as a whole. They look to the cause of a health concern rather than suppressing symptoms. The naturopath works to educate his or her clients in how to stimulate the body’s own vital healing forces. Although all naturopaths emphasize choices based on their own personal interests and experiences, they maintain a consistent philosophy.

A typical visit to a naturopath incorporates these beliefs:

1: Nature is a powerful healing force. The body has considerable power to heal itself. The role of the naturopath is to simply facilitate and enhance this process by educating the client in natural therapies, which stimulate his or her own internal healing force. Above all, the naturopath must do no harm.

2: The person is viewed as a whole. Understanding the client as a unique individual is essential. The naturopath will ask questions and strive to understand the complex interaction of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social factors affecting the client’s total health picture.

3: The goal is to identify and address the cause of the problem. Naturopathy does not attempt to suppress symptoms, since symptoms are seen as part of the body’s attempt to heal itself. A naturopath seeks to understand the underlying causes of a health concern, and helps to control or reduce symptoms through improved lifestyle choices.

4: The naturopath is a teacher. First and foremost, the naturopath educates, empowers and motivates the client to assume more responsibility for his own wellness through having a healthy attitude, lifestyle and diet. After determining the cause of a health concern, the naturopath discusses with the client the various natural options for creating a return to health.

5: Prevention is the best approach. Illness prevention is really best accomplished by lifestyle habits which support health.

I feel we need both types of medicine to stay well in today’s world. In our high stress lifestyle, there may be times when we need to rely on modern medicine for fast symptom relief or to stabilize from a serious health crisis or injury. Still, this type of emergency medicine is no substitute for a sound, nutritious diet regular exercise and the remarkable ability of whole herbs to boost the body’s own natural healing response.

I believe naturopathy is a premier healing choice to create a solid foundation on which to build lifelong health.

Arthritis Nutritional Therapy Plan

The term arthritis (joint inflammation), refers to over 100 diseases that attack joints and connective tissue. Degenerative joint and rheumatic diseases include gout, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis (arthritic spine), psoriatic arthritis (skin and nail arthritis), infective arthritis (bacterial joint infection), fibromyalgia and rheumatism. Today more than 40 million Americans are afflicted by one or more of these crippling conditions, now the leading cause of disability in the U.S. Arthritis is the country’s number one crippling disease, affecting up to 80% of people over 50. Estimates say arthritis cases are rising... over 60 million people in the U.S. will be afflicted in the next two decades. Add to that, people suffering from arthritis-like diseases—gout, bursitis, tendonitis and lupus, and the figure becomes staggering. Arthritis Nutritional Therapy Plan from my bestselling book, Healthy Healing 14th Edition.

1. Change to a low-fat, mostly vegetarian diet - the single most beneficial thing you can do to control any kind of arthritis, even in long-standing cases.

2. Avoid arthritis trigger foods: corn, wheat, rye breads, bacon and pork, beef, eggs, coffee, oranges and milk. Nightshade foods like peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and white potatoes;  colas, chocolate. Diets high in hydrogenated oils and refined sugar aggravate flare-ups.

3. Cut down on: alcohol, fried foods, dairy foods, black tea, salty, highly spiced foods.

4. Add body balancing foods: green tea, artichokes, cherries, cabbages, brown rice, oats (not for rheumatoid arthritis), shiitake mushrooms, cold water fish, sea greens, fresh fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, garlic, onions, olive oil, flax seed oil, sweet potatoes, squashes, ginger and parsley.

5. Arthritis Veggie Special: add to a bottle of vegetable juice, 4 tbsp. each: wheat germ, lecithin granules and nutritional yeast flakes. Take 8-oz. twice daily.

Add ginger syrup (a COX 2 inhibitor) with 1 pinch cayenne pepper, 1 pinch turmeric powder to any healing drink. (Highly recommended.)

Topical applications:  Arnica gel for soreness; Boswellin creme; Capsaicin creme, cayenne-ginger compresses;  Emu oil; Soak hands in oatmeal for 15 minutes for relief.

Could Candida overgrowth be the culprit behind your health problems?

In this post I'm going to talk about a very common health problem that far too many people are simply unaware of: an overgrowth of the Candida albicans yeast. Candida albicans yeast is common, normally living harmlessly in the gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary areas of the body. However, if immune response is reduced from repeated rounds of antibiotics, steroid drugs, a high sugar diet, and chronic stress, the body can lose its balance. In these cases, candida can multiply rapidly, feeding on the excess sugars and carbohydrates in the digestive tract.

Do you have signs of Candida overgrowth?

Two or more yes answers should alert you of a potential problem.

  • Do you have recurrent digestive problems like gas and bloating?

  • Do you have a white coating on your tongue?

  • Do you crave sugar, bread, or alcoholic beverages?

  • If you're a woman, do you have PMS, recurrent vaginal yeast infections or bladder infections?

  • If you're a man, do you have abdominal pains, prostatitis, or loss of sexual interest?

  • Have you recently taken repeated rounds of antibiotics or corticosteroid drugs?

Your diet must simultaneously nourish your body while starving candida of the sugary, refined foods that support its growth. A candida detox strengthens and enhances your digestive ability to assimilate nutrients and normalizes metabolism. It especially strengthens afflicted organs, like the liver and glands. As you start to see improvement, and symptoms decrease (usually after two months), you can start to add back some whole grains, fruits, juices, a little white wine, nuts and beans.

Seaweed Iodine

I understand many of you have serious concerns about radiation fallout. Our office has been inundated with questions on how to protect against radiation damage in the body since the tsunami of 2011 and the ensuing nuclear disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiich plant.  I’m glad to report we do have some good news in light of all this destruction. Seaweeds purify all the world’s oceans- they can do the same for your body. Seaweeds like kelp, dulse and Irish Moss can protect us from a wide range of toxic elements in the environment, including radiation by-products, converting them into harmless salts that our bodies can eliminate. Iodine  can reduce by almost 80% radioactive iodine-131 that is absorbed by the thyroid. Seaweeds are so effective that even the former U.S. Atomic Energy Commission recommended that people consume two to three ounces of seaweeds a week (or 2 tbsp. of algin supplements a day) for protection against radiation poisoning.

Although seaweeds contain the compounds that directly counteract carcinogens, most researchers believe that they also have value in boosting the body’s immune system so it can combat the carcinogens itself.

IMPORTANT: Seaweed based products do not contain as high of levels of iodine as phamaceutical grade potassium iodide (K1), but they do help shore up deficiendies and are a good choice to keep your thyroid gland nourished with organic iodine. Preventively, they are a great choice, but in the event of a serious nuclear emergency, you will need to work with a qualified medical professional to establish a proper protocol. We are all exposed to natural radiation in many forms daily. For a helpful table on radiation risks, please visit this link.

Weight Loss Success After the Holidays

During the holidays, most of us overindulge in sweets. Sugar cravings are the downfall of many well meaning dieters. I know from experience that once you start binging on sugary foods, it's hard to stop. Overeating sugar can lead to serious consequences. Further, sugar raises insulin levels too much, your body’s signal to make fat, bad news for weight loss. Do you need to control sugar cravings?

  • Do you binge on junk foods, especially fatty and sugary foods?

  • Do you eat all of your calories at one meal?

  • Do you have second and third helpings at a meal but still feel hungry?

  • Do you experience a wired feeling that is only relieved by eating sweets?

  • Are you easily frustrated, and moody with frequent crying spells?

If you answered yes to 3 of the 5 questions above, then a sugar craver's weight loss program may be right for you. First, add 2 apples to your diet every day for stabilizing fiber. Second, drink more water to get over diet plateaus. Dehydration slows resting metabolic rate (RMR) and can cause waste products like ketones to build up.

Step-by-Step Estrogen Balancing Diet for Women

You can follow a diet like this for 1–6 months. Add more variety by including your choice of fresh, seasonal organic produce whenever possible. Choose free range meats and seafood from uncontaminated waters as much as possible. Note: Pesticide residues on commercially grown foods can disrupt your hormone balancing efforts, so stick to organic foods whenever possible. On rising:  take lemon juice in water with 1 tsp. maple syrup. Add 1 tsp. of royal jelly or one vial Red Ginseng Royal Jelly for extra hormone balancing help. Breakfast: Have some fresh fruit, nuts and low fat yogurt or kefir; or have my personal breakfast of champions: brown rice, with steamed cruciferous vegetables, sprinkled sea vegetables and a little tamari sauce and fresh ginger. Midmorning: have a mixed vegetable juice with carrot, dandelion greens, beet, cucumber and parsley for a liver detox; or Liver Cleanse Flushing tea (highly recommended); or a high mineral Potassium broth. Lunch:  have a green leafy salad with lemon/flax oil dressing; or a turkey, avocado and baby greens sandwich (gluten-free read) or salad; or a light oriental soup and salad, with sea veggies and rice crackers. Midafternoon: Have another cup of Liver Cleanse Flushing tea (highly recommended). Dinner: have a Chinese stir fry with dark greens and mushrooms, and miso soup with sea greens chopped on top. Or, have baked or poached seafood with vegetables and brown rice or couscous; or a black bean or lentil soup and small salad. Before bed: have a glass of mineral water, or a relaxing herb tea like chamomile tea or Crystal Star Stress Arrest tea.

Ongoing diet tips: Have a fresh green leafy salad with your organic veggies of choice every day. Add more fish and seafood to your diet. Add sea veggies like wakame, nori and dulse regularly. Algin, a gel like substance in sea veggies, protects against chemical overload (often involved in breast cancer) by binding to chemical wastes so they can be eliminated safely from the body. Choose hormone-free chicken and turkey, and hormone-free dairy foods, too. Eat cruciferous veggies like broccoli regularly to improve estrogen metabolism. Add nuts, seeds and avocado for essential fats.

To your best health,

Linda Page
