Natural Therapy for Parasites

wanted-worm-resized-600

wanted-worm-resized-600

Nutritional therapy plan: A strong immune system is the best defense for parasites, many of which have become drug-resistant - low nutrition = low immunity. 1. Go on an apple and apple juice mono diet for 4 days. (1 day for a child). Take 8 garlic caps daily during the fast and chew fresh mango or papaya seeds mixed with honey. On the 3rd day, add papaya juice with 1 tbsp. wormwood tea, and 1 tbsp. molasses. On the 4th day, add 2 cups senna/peppermint tea with 1 tbsp. castor oil, and eat raw pumpkin seeds every 4 hours. Follow with a high resistance diet to prevent recurrence. Eat lots of onions and garlic. Avoid all sweets, dairy foods and junk foods. 3 tbsp. amaranth or rice each morning helps remove parasites. Eat a daily green salad. Drink only bottled water. Take Pure Planet Chlorella, 2 tsp. daily. Garlic enemas or a high colonic irrigation helps clean the colon fast and address fungal infections, or yeast overgrowth conditions.

Are you at risk for parasites? Nationwide research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control over the last 25 years reveals that one in every six people selected at random had one or more parasites. Most kissed and slept with their pets. Many frequently ate raw or smoked fish, or prosciutto or homemade sausages. (Note: Use toilet seat covers in public restrooms.)

Choose 2-3 herbal recommendations:

Parasite cleanse:Parasite Purge caps, or 8 • Cayenne/Garlic capsules, after every meal for 2 weeks, and 4 cups fennel tea daily. (Or take garlic oil capsules in the morning. Refrain from eating or drinking until bowels have moved. Repeat for 3 days.) Then keep intestines cleansed and flushed with •  Ayruvedic Triphala caps.

Anti-Bio caps 4 daily for lymph support; • Black walnut hulls or • Myrrh extract; • Una da gato caps 6 daily for a month

Bodywork: A purged stool test is helpful for diagnosing parasitic infections.

Chlorophyll- A Key to Healing

108150-resized-600

108150-resized-600

Green foods are power plants for people. Our body chemistry comes from plant nutrients because plant chlorophyll (one of the most powerful nutrients on Earth) transmits the energies of the sun and the soil to our bodies.  The sun is the energy source of the Earth—plants constitute the most direct method of conserving the energy we get from the sun. Fruits, vegetables, grains and grasses reach out to us on branches and stems, making themselves beautiful and nourishing to attract us. Chlorophyll offers amazing healing benefits for humans. The most therapeutic ingredient in green foods is chlorophyll, the basic component of the “blood” of plants. Chlorophyll is the pigment that plants use to carry out photosynthesis - absorbing the light energy from the sun, and converting it into plant energy.  This energy is transferred into our cells and blood when we consume fresh greens. Chlorophyll is in all green plants, but is particularly rich in green and blue-green algae, wheat grass, parsley, and alfalfa.

Our blood has a unique affinity to chlorophyll. The chlorophyll molecule is remarkably similar to human hemoglobin in composition, except that it carries magnesium in its center instead of iron. Eating chlorophyll-rich foods helps our bodies build oxygen-carrying red blood cells. In my opinion, eating green foods is almost like giving yourself a little transfusion to help treat illness and enhance immunity.

Chlorophyll is a better tonic than Geritol for tired blood. It calms the nerves, so it’s helpful for insomnia, exhaustion and nervous irritability. It’s beneficial for skin disorders used topically and internally, helps you cope with deep infections, and dental problems like pyorrhea. Its anti-bacterial qualities are a proven remedy for colds, ear infections, skin ulcers and chest inflammation.  Chlorophyll is a key heart remedy, improving the overall condition of the heart and lowering blood pressure. It is a mild diuretic and stimulates peristalsis to relieve constipation.

Chlorophyll detoxifies your liver. It’s a potent antioxidant. It helps neutralize and remove drug deposits, and purifies the blood. Even the medical community sees chlorophyll as a means of removing heavy metal buildup, because it can bind with heavy metals to help remove them. A new U.S. Army study reveals that a chlorophyll-rich diet doubles the lifespan of animals exposed to radiation. Since the days of Agent Orange and Gulf War Syndrome, chlorophyll is considered a form of protection against some chemical warfare weapons and some natural poisons. Research shows supplementation with chlorophyllins (100 milligrams, 3 times daily) can reduce DNA damage caused by poisonous mushrooms by as much as 55%. (The amount used equals about ½ cup chopped raw spinach.)

Chlorophyll is rich in vitamin K, necessary for blood clotting. Naturopathic physicians use chlorophyll for women with heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia. Vitamin K helps form a compound in urine that inhibits growth of calcium oxalate crystals, so chlorophyll helps with kidney stones. Vitamin K also enhances adrenal activity, so chlorophyll-rich foods help maintain steroid balance for a more youthful body.

Chlorophyll improves digestion, reduces chronic bad breath and body odor… even in pets! It is used in natural air deodorizers. You can add chlorophyll to your detox juices during a cleanse to help keep blood sugar levels stable. Liquid chlorophyll is a good choice for people who want the ultimate benefits. Chlorophyll liquids and green superfood drinks from the health food store work well. Incorporate your choice of chlorophyll foods and supplements in your healing program.

A brown rice cleanse is especially useful for dropping a few quick pounds, and it’s a great way to transition from an unhealthy diet into a better diet. A brown rice cleanse is based on macrobiotic principles for body balance. It’s cleansing, yet filling. You don’t feel like you’re on a cleanse at all, yet it does the trick. It’s a diet that uses rice as a nutrient building food, and vegetables and vegetable juices as concentrated cleansing supplements. A brown rice cleanse is high in potassium, natural iodine, and other minerals, so most people notice improvement in their hair, skin texture and nail growth A brown rice diet is the best cleansing diet for colder times of the year. What about a water fast? I don't recommend it.

fruitsveggies-resized-600
fruitsveggies-resized-600

Leading nutritionists and detoxification experts agree that fresh vegetable and fruit juice cleansing is superior to water fasting. Indeed, juice cleansing is an evolution in detoxification methods. Fresh juices, broths and herb teas help deeply cleanse the body, rejuvenate the tissues and guide you to a faster recovery from health problems than water fasting. A traditional water fast is harsh and demanding on your body, even in times before huge amounts of food and environmental toxins were part of the picture. Today, it can even be dangerous. Deeply buried pollutants and chemicals from our tissues are released into elimination channels too rapidly during a water fast. Your body is essentially “re-poisoned” as the chemicals move through the bloodstream all at once. Sometimes, the physical and emotional stress of a water fast even overrides the healing benefits.

Vegetable and fruit juices are alkalizing, so they neutralize uric acid and other inorganic acids, better than water, and increase the healing effects. Juices support better metabolic activity for fasting, too. Metabolic activity slows down during a water fast as the body attempts to conserve dwindling energy resources that further reduce productive cleansing. Juices are very easy on digestion, and easily assimilated into the bloodstream. They don’t disturb the detoxification process.

Anti-Inflammatory, Pain Relieving Diet

There are four basic pain centers: 1: cerebro-spinal area, (nerve, lower back, cramping); 2: frontal lobe area, (ear, tooth and headaches over the eyes); 3: base of the brain (migraines, tension headaches); 4: abdomen, (menstrual cramping, digestive, elimination).  Common paths to pain: Poor posture, poor nutrition, an acidic diet that eats away protective tissue, adrenal exhaustion, injury or surgery, tumors or growths, even repressed anger. All of us have suffered with some degree of pain in our lives, but did you know you can use your diet for pain relief, too? Here are some tips.

Nutritional therapy plan:

1. A vegetarian diet, low in fats, high in minerals is the best support for all kinds of pain - back and menstrual pain, migraines, arthritis, muscle aches.

2. Eat plenty of complex carbohydrates and vegetable proteins for strength: whole grains, broccoli, peas, brown rice, legumes, seafoods, etc. Fermented soy foods like tempeh, miso, natto and tofu are a specific for inflammation relief.

3. Add anthocyanin foods like cherries and berries as anti-inflammatories (often up to 10 times better than aspirin).

4. Add high mineral foods to the diet. Emphasize magnesium and calcium foods for muscle strength. Include bioflavonoid-rich foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables.

5. Have a vegetable drink like Knudsen’s Very Veggie or • Systems Strength broth mix, and a green leafy salad every day. Note: Dehydration worsens chronic pain. Be sure to drink 8 glasses of water daily. Try • Penta bottled water (highly recommended).

6. Avoid caffeine, salty and sugary foods to eliminate an overacid condition.

Bodywork:

• Acupressure: pinch and massage webs between the thumb and index finger.

• Meditation is a proven pain killer. Just 20 minutes of meditation a day can completely change your perception of pain and even alleviate pain sensitivity.

• Chiropractic adjustment, biofeedback, acupuncture, magnet therapy, and massage therapy control pain. • Prolotherapy injections help in reducing pain and improving range of motion. Contact American Assoc. of Orthopedic Medicine at 800-992-2063 for referral.

• Pain-relieving compresses: Plantain-marshmallow; Wintergreen-cajeput oil; Comfrey leaf; Lobelia.

• Topical pain relievers: Arnica gel

April Herb of the Month- Nettles

stinging-nettles-resized-600
stinging-nettles-resized-600

Nettles- Urtica dioica. Add nettles to your spring cleanse program today! Today’s common uses: Nettles is one of the most powerful blood purifying herbs, driving toxins and wastes out of the body by stimulating the kidneys to excrete more water. A daily tea helps hay fever during allergy seasons. Its balanced minerals thicken hair growth and smooth nails.

Traditional Herbal Medicine uses: The Greeks recognized nettle for asthma and spleen support. A medieval remedy called Nettle Beer, made with nettles, dandelion, ginger and cleavers is used today to help ease joint pain. Nettle tea is a traditional spring herb to purify the blood and remove gouty gravel.

Therapeutic parts: leaf, root, stem, seed. To avoid nettles sting, dry or heat the leaves.

Delivery forms: tea, powder, extract, capsules, decoction, fresh juice, poultice, syrup, gargle, compress, wash.

Dark Hair Shine rinse: Combine 1 qt. water, 1 tbsp vinegar to balance pH, 1 tbsp dry rosemary for shine and to stimulate growth, 1 tbsp nettles to nourish scalp with minerals, 1 1/2 teaspoons, dry sage to darken and intensify color.

Common dose: Tincture: 10-15 drops as needed. Juice: 1 teaspoon as needed. Tea: 3 cups daily.

Key compounds: Nettles is very high in chlorophyll, flavonoids, carotenes and vitamin A. Its high iron, magnesium, calcium, boron and beta carotene strengthen the blood and kidneys and enrich the liver. Amazingly, cooked nettle leaves have about the same amount of carotene and vitamin C as spinach or mustard greens.

Is It Time For a Spring Cleanse?

A spring cleanse is a real breath of fresh air for your body after a long winter. It’s one of the best ways to quickly shed winter weight and increase your energy levels. Hippocrates, “the Father of Medicine,” Galen, Paracelsus and other great physicians throughout history prescribed detoxification. It was even practiced by Plato and Socrates. Cleansing has been helping people heal for over 20,000 years! Fact:  At least 20% of the food supply is contaminated with pesticide residues. The average American gets about 68 exposures to these toxins each day!  We are just beginning to see the far-reaching implications on hormonal health, specifically on hormone-driven cancers like that of the breast, testicles, and prostate; infertility problems in men and women; endocrine disorders; and earlier and earlier puberties for young American girls.

Body signs that you may need a detox: A yes answer to two or more of these symptoms should alert you to signs of toxic overload.

—body odor, bad breath or a coated tongue —frequent candida infections or UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) —poor digestion, heartburn, constipation with intestinal bloating or gas —unusual fatigue; relying on stimulant pick-me-ups like sugar and caffeine to get through the day —cellulite collecting on your hips, thighs or tummy

You should be drinking at least 3 glasses of mixed fresh vegetable or fruit juices every day of your cleanse.Fresh fruit and vegetable juices have a powerful effect on the body’s recuperative powers because of their rich, easily absorbed nutrients and life giving enzymes.  Enzyme-rich fresh fruit and vegetable juices literally pick up dead, decaying material in the body and carry it away.  Note: Avoid caffeine, sugar, dairy foods and alcoholic drinks for the duration of your cleanse. They contribute to lymphatic stagnation.

I usually recommend a 3 to 5 day diet plan because it’s the easiest to fit in most people’s busy lifestyles. For the best results, I recommend following your detox with 1 to 4 days of a diet of 100% fresh foods. You can begin on a Friday and detox for a long weekend. For people who want to go on a longer, more intense detox, detox spas and centers where you will receive professional guidance are the best choice.

Traditional Herbal Medicine uses: In ancient times, lemon balm was hung by the front door to ward off evil spirits. It was well known among warriors for staunching bleeding wounds. The Greeks used its crushed leaves as an antibacterial on scorpion stings and dog bites. Known in medieval times as an elixir of youth and longevity; in the 17th century as a remedy for melancholy and memory.

Therapeutic parts: fresh and dried leaves.

Delivery forms: tea, capsules, compress, essential oil, extract, gargle, ointment. Great in garnishes, iced teas, fruit dishes, meals and salads. Wonderful aroma in potpourri.

If you have arthritis, try a therapeutic detox bath for relief

detoxbath-resized-600

detoxbath-resized-600

An arthritis elimination sweating bath can release a surprising amount of toxic material that aggravate your joints. Epsom salts or Dead Sea salts, and herbs with a diaphoretic action, can play a big part in the success of the bath.  Here’s how to take the arthritis bath:

Make a tea of elder flowers, peppermint and yarrow. Drink as hot as possible before the bath. Then pour about 3 pounds of Epsom salts or enough Dead Sea salts for 1 bath into very hot bath water. Rub arthritic joints with a stiff brush in the water for 5 to 10 minutes; try to stay in the bath for 15 to 25 minutes. On emerging, do not dry yourself. Wrap up immediately in a clean sheet and go straight to bed, covering yourself with several blankets. The osmotic pressure of the Epsom salt solution absorbed by the sheet will draw off heavy perspiration. Your mattress should be protected with a sheet of plastic. The following morning the sheet will be stained with wastes excreted through your skin - sometimes the color of egg yolk. (This is a strong detox procedure and it happens relatively quickly. Take care if you have a weak heart or high blood pressure.)

Improvement after an arthritic sweat bath experience is notable. Repeat the bath once every two weeks until the sheet is no longer stained, a sign that the body is well cleansed. Follow up with a Hot Seaweed Bath to continue cleansing. Drink pure water throughout the procedure to prevent dehydration and loss of body salts.

Is Dr. Enzyme safe for my cat?

102050-resized-600

102050-resized-600

Dr. Enzyme is safe for animals. Just 1-2 caps daily is a good dosage for a small to medium sized cat. I have used it with elderly cats to improve their strength and endurance. Holistic vets sometimes use protease enzyme to enhance immune response.. Protease is not a cure, but it’s safe, worth a try and useful to increase immune strength. Dr. Enzyme works the best taken between meals or 1 hour before eating. You can put the capsule in a pill pocket if it is easier. I hope your cat is feeling better soon.-Sarah

A hot seaweed bath uses the sea for cleansing and health

seaweed-resized-600

seaweed-resized-600

Seaweed baths are Nature’s perfect body/psyche balancer. Remember how good you feel after an ocean walk? Seaweeds purify and balance the ocean — they can do the same for your body. A hot seaweed bath is like a wet-steam sauna, only better, because the sea greens balance body chemistry instead of dehydrating it. The electromagnetic action of the seaweed releases excess body fluids from congested cells, and dissolves fatty wastes through the skin, replacing them with depleted minerals, especially potassium and iodine. Iodine boosts thyroid activity, so food fuels are used before they can turn into fatty deposits. Vitamin K in seaweeds boosts adrenal activity, meaning that a seaweed bath can help maintain hormone balance for a more youthful body.Taking a seaweed bath even once a week stimulates lymphatic drainage and fat burning so you can keep off excess weight, reduce cellulite and rid your body of toxins.

Dried seaweeds are available in most health food stores or try my Hot Seaweed Bath.  Here is how to take a this type of bath.

Whichever form you choose, run very hot water over the seaweed in a tub, filling it to the point that you will be covered when you recline. The water will turn rich brown as the plants release their minerals. Add an aromatherapy bath oil if desired, to help hold the heat in and boost your cleansing program. Let the bath cool enough to get in. As you soak, the gel from the seaweed will transfer onto your skin. This coating increases perspiration to release system toxins, and replaces them with minerals by osmosis. Rub your skin with the seaweed during the bath to stimulate circulation, smooth the body, and remove wastes coming out on the skin surface. When the seaweeds have done their work, the gel coating dissolves and floats off the skin, and the seaweeds shrivel - a sign that the bath is over. Each bath varies with the individual, the seaweeds used, and water temperature, but the gel coating release is a natural timekeeper for the bath. Forty-five minutes is usually long enough to balance body pH, encourage liver activity and fat metabolism. Skin tone, color, and circulatory improvement are almost immediately noticeable. After your bath, try a capsule of cayenne and ginger to assimilate the seaweed minerals.

Using Detoxification Therapies to Relieve GERD

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is the major cause of today’s heartburn epidemic. GERD results from stomach acid leaking back into the esophagus and coming up (refluxing) into the throat. GERD also occurs in severe cases of osteoporosis, when the rib cage and upper body collapse to the point where normal food transit is impeded. (My own mother suffered from this; it was extremely painful.) People who suffer from acid reflux are far more likely to develop cancer of the esophagus, now the fastest growing type of cancer in the western world. What puts you at risk for GERD or chronic heartburn? Overeating, enzyme deficiency, too much fast foods and fried foods (all acid-forming), prescription drug side effects, having a hiatal hernia or severe osteoporosis can all lead to GERD.

Signs you may have GERD:

– Chronic heartburn, chest pains and bloating after eating

– Belching, hiccups and regurgitation after eating

– Difficulty swallowing and a full feeling at the base of the throat

– Chronic hoarseness

Detox diet for chronic heartburn or GERD:

Healthy detoxification therapies ease chronic heartburn or GERD, naturally. A healthy detox diet eliminates acid-forming foods and alkalizes the system for fast heartburn relief. You can boost your benefits by continuing with fresh juices, enzyme rich foods and whole herbs long after your cleanse is over.

Start with this sample cleansing diet:

Cleanse the digestive system and establish good enzymes. Follow a detox mono diet of just apples and apple juice for 2 days. For the next 4 days, consume 70 % fresh foods diet (fresh fruits and vegetables, mixed green salads) and brown rice for extra B vitamins.

Continue your cleanse benefits with a largely vegetarian diet. Drink healthy juices for stomach acid balance at least once daily. Choose from: barley grass or spirulina green drinks for chlorophyll; carrot/cabbage juice, a stomach healer; pineapple-papaya juice for extra enzymes; or aloe vera juice, an esophageal soother before meals.

Add cultured foods like yogurt, kefir and miso soup to the ongoing diet for balancing friendly flora. Add lightly steamed vegetables, and enzyme-rich foods like papaya and pineapple.  Other alkaline-forming foods to include regularly: mineral water, seaweeds, herb teas, brown rice, honey, and most fruits. (Note: Melons often aggravate reflux.)

For long term GERD prevention, eliminate fried food and spicy foods—they slow the rate at which your stomach empties, allowing food to travel back to the esophagus. Avoid refined carbohydrates and sugary foods—they boost gastric acidity.

Further, skip red meats, high fat dairy foods, sodas, hard alcohol and caffeine (especially coffee). Switch to herbal teas, like a green and white tea blend with ginger for better digestion.

Quick Tips:

•If 1 tsp. cider vinegar in water relieves your heartburn, you may need more stomach acid.

•If you have flatulence, a catnip or slippery elm enema often provides immediate relief.

• Good digestive teas to include: peppermint, spearmint, ginger, dill, and caraway ease digestion. Try wild yam tea, especially if you have eaten too much refined sugar.

• Try to eat when relaxed. Eat smaller meals. Chew food very well. Don’t take liquids with meals. Don’t lie down after eating. It definitely aggravates reflux problems.

• Consider herbs for GERD relief and healing. Herbs are especially helpful after heavy meals, and for an overeater’s weight control program.

You don’t have to suffer needlessly from chronic heartburn or GERD. Natural therapies are an excellent option, alkalizing the system, soothing discomfort and helping to support tissues.  Most people feel better right away!

Seaweed Iodine

I understand many of you have serious concerns about radiation fallout. Our office has been inundated with questions on how to protect against radiation damage in the body since the tsunami of 2011 and the ensuing nuclear disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiich plant.  I’m glad to report we do have some good news in light of all this destruction. Seaweeds purify all the world’s oceans- they can do the same for your body. Seaweeds like kelp, dulse and Irish Moss can protect us from a wide range of toxic elements in the environment, including radiation by-products, converting them into harmless salts that our bodies can eliminate. Iodine  can reduce by almost 80% radioactive iodine-131 that is absorbed by the thyroid. Seaweeds are so effective that even the former U.S. Atomic Energy Commission recommended that people consume two to three ounces of seaweeds a week (or 2 tbsp. of algin supplements a day) for protection against radiation poisoning.

Although seaweeds contain the compounds that directly counteract carcinogens, most researchers believe that they also have value in boosting the body’s immune system so it can combat the carcinogens itself.

IMPORTANT: Seaweed based products do not contain as high of levels of iodine as phamaceutical grade potassium iodide (K1), but they do help shore up deficiendies and are a good choice to keep your thyroid gland nourished with organic iodine. Preventively, they are a great choice, but in the event of a serious nuclear emergency, you will need to work with a qualified medical professional to establish a proper protocol. We are all exposed to natural radiation in many forms daily. For a helpful table on radiation risks, please visit this link.
