…Long term courses of drugs: antacids reduce nutrient assimilation, antibiotics destroy friendly bacteria vital to GI immunity, anti-inflammatory drugs (like acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen) inhibit white cells that fight infection.

…Long term exposure to smoke, chemicals and pollutants put a strain on the body’s natural detoxification system and lead to genetic mutations that cause cancer.

…A diet high in chemicalized “non-food” foods: I call these foods “foods in a box,” that your body generally rejects or ignores. Fake fats like olestra that rob cancer-fighting carotenoids are especially disrupting.

…Repeated exposure to allergens (from foods, chemicals or environmental allergens) causes the immune system to take a dive because immune defenses are all channeled to deal with the allergen rather than to fight infection. (In turn, allergies are usually the result of impaired immunity.)

…Excessive dieting or low nutrient intake which depresses interferon activity. Overeating also depresses immune response.

…A lifestyle low on rest. Natural killer cell activity is reduced by as much as 28% when sleep is cut by 4 hours (clinical tests at U. CA. San Diego School of Medicine).

…Having parents who smoke, drink to excess or abuse drugs. Children born to addicted parents have more genetic predisposition to illness and infections.

…Not being breast-fed as a child. Breast milk is rich in antibodies, essential fatty acids and interferon that strengthen a child’s developing immune system.

…A poor outlook on life or severe, long lasting depression. In addition, people who overextend themselves may be unusually susceptible to immune system malfunction.

Does Your Immune System Need A Boost?

It isn’t easy to measure immune health. Each one of us is different and the character of immune response varies widely. I’ve worked for years to develop ways people can communicate with their bodies. Here’s a personal quiz to monitor your immune status: If you answer yes to more than 3 of these questions, your immune system is probably sluggish.

1. Do you get long lasting, chronic infections, colds, respiratory problems or allergies? 2. Do you have or have you had in the past any immune-deficient diseases, like chronic fatigue syndrome, Hashimoto’s or fibromyalgia? 3. 1. Change to a low-fat, mostly vegetarian diet - the single most beneficial thing you can do to control any kind of arthritis, even in long-standing cases.

2. Avoid arthritis trigger foods: corn, wheat, rye breads, bacon and pork, beef, eggs, coffee, oranges and milk. Nightshade foods like peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and white potatoes;  colas, chocolate. Diets high in hydrogenated oils and refined sugar aggravate flare-ups.

3. Cut down on: alcohol, fried foods, dairy foods, black tea, salty, highly spiced foods.

4. Add body balancing foods: green tea, artichokes, cherries, cabbages, brown rice, oats (not for rheumatoid arthritis), shiitake mushrooms, cold water fish, sea greens, fresh fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, garlic, onions, olive oil, flax seed oil, sweet potatoes, squashes, ginger and parsley.

5. Arthritis Veggie Special: add to a bottle of vegetable juice, 4 tbsp. each: wheat germ, lecithin granules and nutritional yeast flakes. Take 8-oz. twice daily.

Add ginger syrup (a COX 2 inhibitor) with 1 pinch cayenne pepper, 1 pinch turmeric powder to any healing drink. (Highly recommended.)

Seaweed Iodine

I understand many of you have serious concerns about radiation fallout. Our office has been inundated with questions on how to protect against radiation damage in the body since the tsunami of 2011 and the ensuing nuclear disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiich plant.  I’m glad to report we do have some good news in light of all this destruction. Seaweeds purify all the world’s oceans- they can do the same for your body. Seaweeds like kelp, dulse and Irish Moss can protect us from a wide range of toxic elements in the environment, including radiation by-products, converting them into harmless salts that our bodies can eliminate. Iodine  can reduce by almost 80% radioactive iodine-131 that is absorbed by the thyroid. Seaweeds are so effective that even the former U.S. Atomic Energy Commission recommended that people consume two to three ounces of seaweeds a week (or 2 tbsp. of algin supplements a day) for protection against radiation poisoning.

Although seaweeds contain the compounds that directly counteract carcinogens, most researchers believe that they also have value in boosting the body’s immune system so it can combat the carcinogens itself. 

IMPORTANT: Seaweed based products do not contain as high of levels of iodine as phamaceutical grade potassium iodide (K1), but they do help shore up deficiendies and are a good choice to keep your thyroid gland nourished with organic iodine. Preventively, they are a great choice, but in the event of a serious nuclear emergency, you will need to work with a qualified medical professional to establish a proper protocol. Step-by-Step Estrogen Balancing Diet for Women

You can follow a diet like this for 1–6 months. Add more variety by including your choice of fresh, seasonal organic produce whenever possible. Choose free range meats and seafood from uncontaminated waters as much as possible. Note: Pesticide residues on commercially grown foods can disrupt your hormone balancing efforts, so stick to organic foods whenever possible. On rising:  take lemon juice in water with 1 tsp. maple syrup. Add 1 tsp. of royal jelly or one vial Red Ginseng Royal Jelly for extra hormone balancing help. Breakfast: Have some fresh fruit, nuts and low fat yogurt or kefir; or have my personal breakfast of champions: brown rice, with steamed cruciferous vegetables, sprinkled sea vegetables and a little tamari sauce and fresh ginger. Midmorning: have a mixed vegetable juice with carrot, dandelion greens, beet, cucumber and parsley for a liver detox; or Liver Cleanse Flushing tea (highly recommended); or a high mineral Potassium broth. Using Herbs for Fertility Q & A

Are you prone to kidney stones?

In every decade since World War II, the U.S. has seen a steady rise in kidney stone cases. Today 10% of American men and 5% of American women will have a kidney stone by the time they’re seventy. Kidney stones are a diet-related illness. They are directly linked to lack of water, large amounts of animal protein and too much salt. Notable amounts of unabsorbed calcium (usually from dairy sources or antacids), also may play a part. Diet improvement can deter, even arrest, kidney stones.

After your cleanse: As you return to solid foods, make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Even meat eaters have a lower incidence of stones when they add extra fresh fruits and vegetables. Keep salt and protein low for at least 3 weeks. Establish a diet with plenty of fiber. Vitamin K plays a key role in your body’s natural inhibition of kidney stone formation. Make sure you add plenty of green leafy vegetables, sprouts and sea veggies, high in vitamin K.

Menopause- Taking Control Of Your Life Change

By 2015, almost half of all American women will be in menopause. Will the temperature of the planet rise from all the hot flashes?! Menopause is intended by Nature to be a gradual reduction of estrogen by the ovaries with few side effects. In a well-nourished, vibrant woman, the adrenals and other glands pick up the job of estrogen secretion to keep her active and attractive after menopause. While almost 90% of women experience some menopausal body changes and hormonal fluctuations, most only last a year or two and are not severe enough to interrupt their lives. Still, our modern stressful lifestyles and poor eating habits mean that many women reach their menopausal years with prematurely worn out adrenals and poor liver function where estrogen is not being processed correctly, so hormone fluctuations are magnified. Hormone Replacement Therapy

There’s a firestorm of controversy about synthetic hormone replacement. Premarin, an estrogen replacement drug for menopausal women made from pregnant mare’s urine, is one of the top selling drugs in the U.S.  The threat of breast and uterine cancer is dramatically increased with HRT, and the risk increases as a woman ages. In an action that received wide media attention, U.S. government scientists halted a July 2002 study on hormone replacement because it was such a threat to the participants’ health. Increased risk of invasive breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs) were all cited as reasons for halting the study. The drugs being tested included Premarin, Prempro and Provera. In hopeful news, some research finds that the higher risk for breast cancer diminishes, even largely disappears when a woman is off HRT treatment for five years.

What’s The HRT Connection To Osteoporosis?

HRT is still strongly promoted for osteoporosis prevention. Many menopausal women are so afraid of osteoporosis that with a little coaxing from their physicians they begin taking hormone drugs right away. Of those, about 60% discontinue the therapy because of side effects or fear of cancer! There is no question that hormones are involved in bone-building and bone loss, but declining estrogen levels after menopause do not by themselves cause osteoporosis. Although some studies show estrogen inhibits bone cell death, the newest tests reveal that as many as 15% of women on estrogen therapy continue to lose bone! Moreover, estrogen isn’t the only hormone involved in bone building. The hormone progesterone actually increases bone density in clinical tests. Low androgen levels of DHEA and testosterone also play a role in bone loss.

All About BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy)

With celebrity endorsements from Suzanne Somers and Oprah Winfrey, today bioidentical hormones are an incredibly popular approach to relieve menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats and low libido. One reason is bioidentical hormones avoid high doses of estrogen common to conventional HRT drugs like Prempro. Early research suggests they may even be safer with less breast/uterine cancer risk than traditional drugs. Common side effects like weight gain and mood swings are often reduced, too.

How Are Bioidentical Hormones Unique?

Bioidentical hormones are synthesized from plant sources and are chemically identical to what is produced in the body. Estradiol, estrone, estriol, DHEA, progesterone and testosterone are all available. Some bioidenticals are FDA approved and sold in a standardized dosage. However, most are produced on a case-by-case basis. Your physician tests your blood or saliva in order  (sometimes at different times of day) to develop the formula for you to reach a targeted level of hormones. Menopause The Natural Way

80 percent of postmenopausal women in the U.S. do not use any form of HRT at all! Beyond increased cancer risk, HRT can have many unpleasant side effects. Are You Stressed Out?

More than 30% of Americans say they are under constant stress. Eight out of ten people say their stress has grown in the last 5 years, citing the economy as the most significant factor. What are the health effects of chronic stress?

Are Hormone Disrupters impacting You?

Science is just beginning to accept, even though naturopaths have known for some time, that man-made estrogens can stack the deck against women by increasing their estrogen levels hundreds of times over normal levels. Although many scientists still believe that there is no significant difference between man-made and natural hormones, the evidence of thousands of women shows that even if a lab test can’t tell the difference, their bodies can. There is a link between pesticides and breast cancer. Pesticides, and other pollutants, are stored in body fat areas like breast tissue. Pesticides like PCB’s and DDT compromise immune  and liver function, and affect glands and hormones the way too much estrogen does. Today’s dramatic rise in breast cancer is consistent with the accumulation of organo-chlorine residues in the environment. One study shows 50 to 60% more dichloro-diphenyl-ethylene (DDE) and polychlorinated bi-phenols, (PCB’s) in women who have breast cancer than in those who don’t. The amount of DDT in body tissues is also higher. Some researchers suggest that the reason older women are experiencing a higher rate of breast cancer may be that these women had greater exposure to DDT before it was banned.

Other women’s diseases associated with long exposure to estrogen mimics in the environment: 1) reproductive organ cancer; 2) breast and uterine fibroids; 3) polycystic ovarian syndrome; 4) endometriosis; 5) PID (pelvic inflammatory disease); 6) gallbladder disease; 7) blood clots, stroke.

Are Hormone Disrupters Impacting You? Signs that you may have estrogen disruption: •    Breast inflammation and pain that worsens before menstrual periods, usually followed by heavy, painful periods. •    Weight gain: especially in the hips. Bloating, mood swings, low sex drive or vaginal dryness. •    Head hair loss/facial hair growth. All About Male Hormone Problems

I've been talking a lot about women's health issues lately, and my male clients are starting to ask: "What about men? Are male hormone problems prevalent? If so, what can be done to help?" Today's blog post addresses male hormone issues, and the signs to watch for that you might be affected Did you know low testosterone affects an astounding 1,000,000 American men? Yet in a recent survey, 68% of men cannot name a single symptom caused by low testosterone. Only 15% named low sex drive as a symptom of low testosterone; 6% named fatigue; 3% named a decrease in muscle mass; and less than 1% linked low testosterone to men’s osteoporosis. Clearly, many men are in the dark about how hormone imbalances affect their health.

Men’s hormone changes have been much less publicized and researched than women’s, but hormone disruption is as much a part of a man’s life as it is a woman’s. Some men are more attuned to their hormonal fluctuations than others. Some report clear monthly changes in their energy levels, mood, work and sports performance. Blood levels of testosterone fluctuate at different times in life- from 250 to 1,200 nanograms, and these changes affect a man’s performance, mood and sexuality.

While a man’s hormone fluctuations are less dramatic than a woman’s, testosterone levels start to decline around age 40, falling up to 10% each decade. This phenomenon called “andropause” is now recognized by almost eight in ten family physicians as a real condition that affects quality of life for men. Doctors are becoming increasingly interested in TRT (testosterone replacement therapy) for andropausal men, but I find most men benefit more from a lifestyle program emphasizing natural foods, bodywork therapies and supportive herbs and supplements designed to meet their changing needs.

If you're a man, here are a few signs your hormones may be out of balance:

• You have prostate pain and inflammation with poor urinary control. • A pouchy stomach with poor abdominal tone. • Reduced sex drive and/or impotence. •Low energy, unexplained fatigue or moodiness. •Premature balding or hair loss. •Loss of muscle mass or bone loss (osteoporosis).

What Causes Male Hormone Problems?

1) Synthetic steroid use. 2) Chronic stress, which leads to adrenal exhaustion (the adrenal glands produce most hormones). 3) Severe dieting, serious body building, surgery or long illness. 4) Poor diet with nutrient deficiencies (especially protein, calcium and iodine deficiency), low B Complex or EFAs. 5) Heavy alcohol use or prescription drug use. 6) Excess exposure to hormone disrupters in the environment. 7) Having a vasectomy can be involved in some men.

Is a Gluten-Free Lifestyle Right For You?

Food allergies and gluten sensitivities are one of the fastest growing forms of allergic reactions in the U.S. today. Well over 35 million Americans suffer from food allergies. The numbers of people who suffer from sensitivities to wheat or gluten-containing products are even higher. Over time and left untreated, gluten allergies can lead to chronic problems like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (I.B.S.), Crohn’s disease and Celiac disease. Most ancient civilizations enjoyed whole grains as a regular part of their daily diet. Is the human body today that different? What’s really causing today’s gluten sensitivity problem? It often develops in aging populations today, people who often have low digestive enzymes and Hcl, and who eat a large amount of pre-prepared and refined foods, and are regularly taking an overload of prescription and over-the counter drugs that damage the digestive tract.

What’s Causing The Grain Allergy Epidemic?

1.  Heavily Treated, Overly Refined Grains: Wheat is one of the primary grains consumed in America, but today’s wheat crops are heavily sprayed with pesticides, a major suspect in food allergies and reactions. In addition, the majority of whole grain products you purchase at the grocery store are made with “enriched” flour which has been refined and bleached, a process which strips it of 80% of its vitamins and minerals. Four nutrients (iron, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin) are added back, but are in synthetic forms that are less usable by the body. Then, a host of additives, preservatives, colorings and sugars are added, contributing to the chemical overload. Most commercial wheat products are difficult for even the strongest digestive system to process over a long period of time.

2.  Low Hcl (hydrochloric acid), Drug Side Effects and Enzyme Deficiency: Hcl is a stomach acid necessary for proper digestion. Hcl decreases with age; One study showed that 80% of people at 84 years old had low Hcl. Pepsin, an enzyme required to break down protein for digestion, is activated by Hcl. Further, antacids which neutralize stomach HCL (Hydrochloric acid), vital for digestion, also disrupt normal processes. The use of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) is a common thread in digestive disorders because of their clear link to ulcers and bleeding in the GI tract. Low digestive enzymes from a lack of raw foods is common today and can lead to poor digestion, too. Over time, the effects of undigested or partially digested food in the gut can be devastating. The gut wall becomes more permeable and undigested proteins begin leaking out into the bloodstream. The immune system sees the protein particles as invaders, causing inflammation and the food allergy response. Gluten proteins (found in wheat) are especially difficult to process and are a main factor in the development of Celiac disease, a type of malabsorption that causes severe intestinal problems, and Candida yeast overgrowth. People often combine high gluten grains with heavy proteins in meat or high sugar in fruit. This combination further impairs healthy digestion. Just adding more enzymes from raw foods or supplements is a great way to get wheat sensitivities and poor digestion under control. A 1995 Italian study shows supplementing with pancreatic enzymes enhances the benefits of a gluten-free diet for Celiac patients. What’s Left After You Eliminate Wheat From Your Diet? Eliminating wheat or gluten may seem like an impossible task, but there are many healthy options to ease the transition. Look for wheat-free and gluten-free choices at your health food store. Pasta (I like vegetable pastas made with quinoa or rice), cereal (hot and cold), whole grain flours, breads and snackfoods are all available.

Try these options: rice (red, brown, wild, risotto), amaranth, corn, millet, oats (not tolerated by all celiacs), and quinoa. Legumes like chickpea (hummus), lentils and split peas (dal) make hearty side dishes with none of the risk of wheat or gluten. Rice breads are a tasty option for a wheat free sandwich. They’re a little crumbly, but are often sweetened with fruit juice to enhance flavor, and usually well accepted by gluten intolerant people.

Note 1: Ancient grains like spelt and kamut can be enjoyed by 70% of people allergic to commercial wheat, but neither is good choice for a person with true celiac disease (gluten allergy).

Note 2: Soba noodles made from 100% buckwheat are another good choice. Still, many processed soba foods contain gluten and are not a good choice for people with true celiac disease (gluten allergy).

Note 3: While not as nutritious as the grains listed above, people with gluten sensitivity can sometimes tolerate tapioca and potato starch. Take a small amount to see - you’ll know right away if they’re OK for you.
