Healthy Healing's Detoxification

Intense Fat and Sugar Cleanse

Is your body showing signs that it needs a fat and sugar cleanse?

• Is cellulite collecting on your hips, thighs or tummy? Cellulite is a mixture of fat, water and wastes trapped beneath the skin.
• Are your upper arms slightly flabby? Is your waistline, wrists and ankles noticeably thicker?
• Does your face look jowl-y or puffy?
If your diet problem is eating too much fat and sugars, try my light detox from fats and sugars for 1 – 3 days. It makes you feel terrific and it’s so easy. Sugary foods and highly processed foods like fast foods are so devoid of digestive enzymes that they collect as excess fat. If you are congested, your body tries to dump its metabolic wastes to get them out of the way. One of the places that receives metabolic wastes is excess fat.

Start the night before with a green leafy salad to sweep your intestines. Dry brush your skin all over for five minutes before you go to bed to open your pores for the night’s cleansing eliminations.
Upon rising: have a cup of green tea to cut through and eliminate fatty wastes. For maximum results, add drops of ginseng extract to control sugar cravings, or licorice extract for sugar stabilizing.
Breakfast: have a Fat Melt Down Juice: juice 2 apples, 2 pears, 1 slice of fresh ginger to help reduce fat from places where it is stored in cellulite. The ginger stimulates better blood circulation.
Mid-morning: a green superfood drink once a day helps cleanse your body of fatty build-up.
Lunch: enjoy a mixed vegetable juice, like Knudsen’s Very Veggie. Regular V-8 juice works fine.
Mid-afternoon: Take a glass of papaya-pineapple juice, or a cup of green tea to enhance enzyme production. Enzymes are a dieter’s best friend!
Dinner: Have miso soup with snipped sea greens. Sea veggies add minerals and improve sluggish metabolism.  Add spices like cayenne, mustard and ginger to speed up fat burning.
Before bed: have a cup of apple juice, licorice or peppermint tea to restore normal body pH.

Focus on reducing fats and sugars in your diet. Add more fiber to get rid of excess sugar, especially from whole grains, legumes like peas, and vegetables. High fiber foods improve glucose metabolism, help promote weight loss and reduce cravings for sugar.
Take a 15 minute dry sauna several days a week for a month. Raising your body temperature with dry heat really helps balance sugar levels. When I worked at a European spa, we used this technique for weight loss and blood sugar problems with great results!
Expert dieters drink 8 glasses of water a day. Water naturally suppresses appetite and helps maintain a high metabolic rate. In fact, water is the most important catalyst for increased fat burning. It enhances the liver’s ability to detox and metabolize so it can process more fats. Don’t worry about fluid retention; high water intake actually decreases bloating, because it flushes out sodium and toxins.

Are you ready for a Liver Detox?

jpeg.jpg

Is a Liver Detox Right for You? Your liver is your most important organ of detoxification. Your life depends on your liver. To a large extent, the health of your liver determines the health of your entire body. The liver is really a wonderful chemical plant that converts everything we eat, breathe and absorb through the skin into life-sustaining substances.

Body signals that your liver needs some TLC include: • Unexplained fatigue, listlessness, depression or lethargy, lack of energy; numerous allergy reactions • Unexplained weight gain and the appearance of cellulite even if you are thin • A distended stomach even if the rest of the body is thin • Mental confusion, spaciness • Sluggish elimination, general constipation alternating to diarrhea • Food and chemical sensitivities, usually accompanied by poor digestion, and sometimes unexplained nausea • PMS, headaches and other menstrual difficulties; bags under the eyes • A yellowish tint to the skin and/or liver spots on the skin; poor hair texture and slow hair growth; skin itching and irritation. • Anemia and large bruise patches indicate severe liver exhaustion.

Liver Cleanse Nutrition Plan

Start with this 3 to 5 day nutrition plan.

Don’t forget: 8 glasses of water through the day.

The night before your liver cleanse… Take a cup of miso soup with sea veggies.

For the next 3-5 days...

On rising: take 1 lemon squeezed in a glass of water; or 2 tbsp. lemon juice in water; or 2 tbsp. cider vinegar in water with 1 tsp. honey. Breakfast: take a glass of carrot/beet/cucumber juice, or organic apple juice. Add 1 tsp. spirulina to any drink for protein and chlorophyll support. Mid-morning: take a mixed green veggie drink; or take a green superfood powder mixed into water or vegetable juice. Lunch: have a glass of fresh carrot juice or a glass of organic apple juice. Mid-afternoon: have a cup of peppermint tea, pau d’ arco tea, or Crystal Star Liver Cleanse Flushing Tea; or another green drink. Dinner: have another carrot juice or a mixed vegetable juice; or have a hot vegetable broth. Before Bed: take another glass of lemon juice or cider vinegar in water. What about a water fast? I don't recommend it.

fruitsveggies-resized-600
fruitsveggies-resized-600

Leading nutritionists and detoxification experts agree that fresh vegetable and fruit juice cleansing is superior to water fasting. Indeed, juice cleansing is an evolution in detoxification methods. Fresh juices, broths and herb teas help deeply cleanse the body, rejuvenate the tissues and guide you to a faster recovery from health problems than water fasting. A traditional water fast is harsh and demanding on your body, even in times before huge amounts of food and environmental toxins were part of the picture. Today, it can even be dangerous. Deeply buried pollutants and chemicals from our tissues are released into elimination channels too rapidly during a water fast. Your body is essentially “re-poisoned” as the chemicals move through the bloodstream all at once. Sometimes, the physical and emotional stress of a water fast even overrides the healing benefits.

Vegetable and fruit juices are alkalizing, so they neutralize uric acid and other inorganic acids, better than water, and increase the healing effects. Juices support better metabolic activity for fasting, too. Metabolic activity slows down during a water fast as the body attempts to conserve dwindling energy resources that further reduce productive cleansing. Juices are very easy on digestion, and easily assimilated into the bloodstream. They don’t disturb the detoxification process.

Diet is an essential component of recovery. Emphasis must be on optimal nutrient foods that can strengthen your body and build strong immune response. Reduce dietary fats, caffeine, sugar, and alcohol. Don’t smoke. It seriously depresses immune response.

  • Eat plenty of fresh vegetables, especially high chlorophyll, blood cleansing leafy greens. Have a salad every day with flax oil or olive oil dressing for essential fatty acids.
  • Have a glass of fresh vegetable juice (any blend) daily.
  • Eat only whole foods. No junk or heavily processed foods.
  • Eat about 2 tablespoons of dried sea vegetables daily.
  • Eat yogurt or other cultured foods for friendly flora.
  • Add neutralizing superfoods for detoxification support.
  • Drink purified water, about eight 8-oz. glasses daily.

Some supplements and superfoods we work with help build immune strength.

March Herb of the Month- Lemon Balm

honey lemon balm lemonade

As we move closer to spring, very few herbs can rival lemon balm in gently cleansing and renewing the mind and body after a long winter.

Lemon Balm:Melissa officinalis

Today’s common uses: Lemon balm is a good nervine for insomnia, tension headaches, nervous stomach and mild depression. It is a de-stressing aromatherapy oil to treat nervousness. New studies suggest it may even improve mental performance and balance moods in dementia patients.

Traditional Herbal Medicine uses: In ancient times, lemon balm was hung by the front door to ward off evil spirits. It was well known among warriors for staunching bleeding wounds. The Greeks used its crushed leaves as an antibacterial on scorpion stings and dog bites. Known in medieval times as an elixir of youth and longevity; in the 17th century as a remedy for melancholy and memory.

Therapeutic parts: fresh and dried leaves.

Delivery forms: tea, capsules, compress, essential oil, extract, gargle, ointment. Great in garnishes, iced teas, fruit dishes, meals and salads. Wonderful aroma in potpourri.

Key compounds: Lemon balm’s rosmarinic acid is a powerful antioxidant. Lemon balm citronella terpene has sedating effects.

Weight loss after 40 through healthy detoxification!

Even though Americans are still looking for the “miracle magic bullet” for slimness, everyone is slowly realizing that a good diet has to be front and center for health and body tone. Long term weight control is always the result of a sound nutritious eating plan and regular exercise, rather than a try at the latest fad diet. One of the great advantages of achieving weight loss through a cleansing program is the extra energy you feel from the fresh juices, superfoods, herb teas and healing broths. Most weight loss diets have little nutrition to offer so they leave you feeling tired and lifeless. In the end, even if you lose weight, your body feels so deprived that it starts ravenous cravings for foods that put the weight right back on.  A cleanse is one of the best ways to jump start a new health program. Unhealthy fats, like saturated fats in meats and dairy foods, trans-fats like those in many dairy foods, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils like those in margarine, shortening and many snack foods, and oxidized fats, like those in all fried foods, collect into excess body fat. Sugary foods and highly processed foods (like fast foods) are so devoid of digestive enzymes that they end up collecting as excess fat, too. Further, if you are congested, your body tries to dump its metabolic wastes to get them out of the way — one of the places that receives metabolic wastes is excess fat.

A 2-3 week Detox Diet for Weight Loss

Making a healing diet change and losing excess weight is one of the best things you can do for your health. The rewards are high - a longer, healthier life - and control of your life.

On rising: Squeeze 2 lemons in a glass of water, and drink for a quick liver flush.

Breakfast: Have a poached or baked egg with bran muffins or whole grain toast with ghee or a healthy jam; or have low fat yogurt and some whole grain cereal.; or Try a healthy meal replacement shake.

Mid-morning: Have a green veggie drink, or natural V-8 juice or peppermint tea; or a cup of miso soup with sea greens snipped on top; or crunchy raw veggies with yogurt cheese dip.

Lunch: Have fresh leafy green salad with a lemon/oil or yogurt dressing with baked tofu; or miso soup, with steamed veggies and a light sauce.

Mid-afternoon: Have a bottle of mineral water, or a cup of peppermint tea, or apple or cranberry juice; or have a superfood drink like Energy Green.

Dinner: Have a stir-fry with lots of greens, onions, mushrooms, with clear soup and brown rice; or baked/broiled fish or seafood with some steamed veggies, brown rice or millet.

Evening snack: Have some un-buttered spicy popcorn. It’s good for you and its airiness will fill you up and keep you from wanting heavier or “habit” foods.

Bodywork techniques accelerate and round out your cleanse

Daily exercise releases fat from cells. A brisk walk burns calories and cuts cravings. An outdoor walk in winter raises low serotonin levels. Exercise early in the day raises metabolism as much as 25%! Exercising before breakfast helps the body dip into its fat stores for quick energy and curbs the munchies all day. Even if eating habits just slightly change, you can still lose weight with a brisk hour’s walk or 15 minutes of aerobic exercise.

Using Detoxification Therapies to Relieve GERD

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is the major cause of today’s heartburn epidemic. GERD results from stomach acid leaking back into the esophagus and coming up (refluxing) into the throat. GERD also occurs in severe cases of osteoporosis, when the rib cage and upper body collapse to the point where normal food transit is impeded. (My own mother suffered from this; it was extremely painful.) People who suffer from acid reflux are far more likely to develop cancer of the esophagus, now the fastest growing type of cancer in the western world. What puts you at risk for GERD or chronic heartburn? Overeating, enzyme deficiency, too much fast foods and fried foods (all acid-forming), prescription drug side effects, having a hiatal hernia or severe osteoporosis can all lead to GERD.

Signs you may have GERD:

– Chronic heartburn, chest pains and bloating after eating

– Belching, hiccups and regurgitation after eating

– Difficulty swallowing and a full feeling at the base of the throat

– Chronic hoarseness

Detox diet for chronic heartburn or GERD:

Healthy detoxification therapies ease chronic heartburn or GERD, naturally. A healthy detox diet eliminates acid-forming foods and alkalizes the system for fast heartburn relief. You can boost your benefits by continuing with fresh juices, enzyme rich foods and whole herbs long after your cleanse is over.

Start with this sample cleansing diet:

Cleanse the digestive system and establish good enzymes. Follow a detox mono diet of just apples and apple juice for 2 days. For the next 4 days, consume 70 % fresh foods diet (fresh fruits and vegetables, mixed green salads) and brown rice for extra B vitamins.

Continue your cleanse benefits with a largely vegetarian diet. Drink healthy juices for stomach acid balance at least once daily. Choose from: barley grass or spirulina green drinks for chlorophyll; carrot/cabbage juice, a stomach healer; pineapple-papaya juice for extra enzymes; or aloe vera juice, an esophageal soother before meals.

Add cultured foods like yogurt, kefir and miso soup to the ongoing diet for balancing friendly flora. Add lightly steamed vegetables, and enzyme-rich foods like papaya and pineapple.  Other alkaline-forming foods to include regularly: mineral water, seaweeds, herb teas, brown rice, honey, and most fruits. (Note: Melons often aggravate reflux.)

For long term GERD prevention, eliminate fried food and spicy foods—they slow the rate at which your stomach empties, allowing food to travel back to the esophagus. Avoid refined carbohydrates and sugary foods—they boost gastric acidity.

Further, skip red meats, high fat dairy foods, sodas, hard alcohol and caffeine (especially coffee). Switch to herbal teas, like a green and white tea blend with ginger for better digestion.

Quick Tips:

•If 1 tsp. cider vinegar in water relieves your heartburn, you may need more stomach acid.

•If you have flatulence, a catnip or slippery elm enema often provides immediate relief.

• Good digestive teas to include: peppermint, spearmint, ginger, dill, and caraway ease digestion. Try wild yam tea, especially if you have eaten too much refined sugar.

• Try to eat when relaxed. Eat smaller meals. Chew food very well. Don’t take liquids with meals. Don’t lie down after eating. It definitely aggravates reflux problems.

• Consider herbs for GERD relief and healing. Herbs are especially helpful after heavy meals, and for an overeater’s weight control program.

You don’t have to suffer needlessly from chronic heartburn or GERD. Natural therapies are an excellent option, alkalizing the system, soothing discomfort and helping to support tissues.  Most people feel better right away!

Deep breathing is a superb anti-aging technique

Deep breathing is a powerful way to decrease stress and increase calm energy. Low body oxygen can cause anxiety, depression, tight muscles, aches and pains, and exacerbate chronic illness. Diaphragmatic breathing is the deepest kind of breathing. Deep diaphragm breathing lowers anxiety levels, relaxes and loosens muscles, and generates an inner feeling of peace and calm. Diaphragm breathing also strengthens heart and lungs, encourages more restful sleep and slows the aging process. Some basic diaphragm breathing steps:

1) Inhale deeply through your nose. Try to fill your lungs.

2) Exhale slowly through your mouth.

3) Breathe deeply for 30 seconds. It takes less than a minute to calm and center yourself during anxious moments. Breathing deeply for just one minute prevents short breaths that negatively affect the oxygen-carbon dioxide content of your blood.

4) Now breathe deeply to fill the lower part of your lungs. Notice the pop-pop feeling in your chest as unused lung pockets open up. Your abdomen extends slightly as you fill it with air. Slowly exhale — your abdomen moves inward.

5) As you breathe in deeply, think of oxygen reaching and recharging all the cells of your body. As you exhale, imagine all the stress and tension leaving your body.

November Herb of the Month- Evening Primrose

Evening primrose- Oenothera biennis Today’s common uses: Evening primrose GLA (gamma linolenic acid) positively affects sex hormone response and balance. It should be a key part of any hormone program to control PMS, menopausal problems, infertility, and prostate problems for men. It also prevents hardening of the arteries and lowers cholesterol. A primary herb for skin beauty, hair loss and soothing breast soreness. An excellent preventive remedy for hangovers and cell damage from drugs and alcohol. As an EFA source, evening primrose helps even serious degenerative diseases like M.S. and muscular dystrophy. GLA from evening primrose is important for increasing prostaglandin production to treat many problems caused by low essential fatty acids: eczema, fibocystic breast pain, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage of legs, feet, arms and hands of long-term diabetics). Traditional Herbal Medicine uses: Native Americans used it for digestive problems, coughs and sore throats and wounds, and as a staple food. They made a tea from the roots for obesity and bowel problems.

Common doses: 2 to 3 500mg gelcaps daily for hormone problems; 2 caps daily for EFA related problems.

Key compounds: A GLA (gamma linoleic acid) rich herb to enhance prostaglandin balance which helps regulate blood clotting, decrease inflammation, stimulate hormone production, and regulate PMS-related water retention. The oil has 74 percent linolenic acid (LA) and 8-10 percent gamma linolenic acid (GLA).  High in tryptophan, to promote healthy sleep patterns.

Can be taken during pregnancy precisely because the body requires more essential fatty acids during that time.

Works in synergy with: 1) for PMS and cramping, combine with dong quai and vitex. 2) Or Try Evening Primrose Pearls.

Note: There are a number of GLA rich herbs available - borage seed, black currant, arugula, sea weed, ginger are all worthy sources, but in my experience, Evening Primrose oil, is by far the most effective for hormone related problems for both men and women.

Step-by-Step Estrogen Balancing Diet for Women

You can follow a diet like this for 1–6 months. Add more variety by including your choice of fresh, seasonal organic produce whenever possible. Choose free range meats and seafood from uncontaminated waters as much as possible. Note: Pesticide residues on commercially grown foods can disrupt your hormone balancing efforts, so stick to organic foods whenever possible. On rising:  take lemon juice in water with 1 tsp. maple syrup. Add 1 tsp. of royal jelly or one vial Red Ginseng Royal Jelly for extra hormone balancing help. Breakfast: Have some fresh fruit, nuts and low fat yogurt or kefir; or have my personal breakfast of champions: brown rice, with steamed cruciferous vegetables, sprinkled sea vegetables and a little tamari sauce and fresh ginger. Midmorning: have a mixed vegetable juice with carrot, dandelion greens, beet, cucumber and parsley for a liver detox; or Liver Cleanse Flushing tea (highly recommended); or a high mineral Potassium broth. Lunch:  have a green leafy salad with lemon/flax oil dressing; or a turkey, avocado and baby greens sandwich (gluten-free read) or salad; or a light oriental soup and salad, with sea veggies and rice crackers. Midafternoon: Have another cup of Liver Cleanse Flushing tea (highly recommended). Dinner: have a Chinese stir fry with dark greens and mushrooms, and miso soup with sea greens chopped on top. Or, have baked or poached seafood with vegetables and brown rice or couscous; or a black bean or lentil soup and small salad. Before bed: have a glass of mineral water, or a relaxing herb tea like chamomile tea or Crystal Star Stress Arrest tea.

Ongoing diet tips: Have a fresh green leafy salad with your organic veggies of choice every day. Add more fish and seafood to your diet. Add sea veggies like wakame, nori and dulse regularly. Algin, a gel like substance in sea veggies, protects against chemical overload (often involved in breast cancer) by binding to chemical wastes so they can be eliminated safely from the body. Choose hormone-free chicken and turkey, and hormone-free dairy foods, too. Eat cruciferous veggies like broccoli regularly to improve estrogen metabolism. Add nuts, seeds and avocado for essential fats.

To your best health,
